“Yeah, let’s do that.” Rhett looked at Lucinda. “Dress warm, darlin’. We’ll show you the ranch.”

“Are you sure you want me to go?”

“Of course,” Penelope said with a smile. “If Beatrice and Nathanial don’t mind babysitting for a little while.”

“Of course not. Go have fun. We’ll stay inside where it’s warm. Just be careful,” Beatrice said.

“You know us, Mom.” Rhett grinned.

“I do, and that’s why I said to be careful.”

Nate and Rhett laughed. After dressing in warm clothes, they met in the kitchen. Once there, Lucinda pulled on her beanie and gloves.

“Here, take this scarf. It will keep your face warm. Do you have sunglasses with you?”

“Yes.”

“Get them. That snow can blind you with the sun bouncing off it.”

“Okay. They’re in my purse. I’ll be right back.”

A few minutes later, they trudged to the barn, entered, and strode to the ATVs sitting in the corner.

“I hope they have gas.”

“Dad always keeps gas in them.” Nate grinned.

“Good. I’d hate to get out there and run out of gas.” Rhett shook his head.

“We’ll take the walkie-talkies too.” Nate entered a room, emerged with two radios, and handed one to Rhett.

Rhett straddled one of the ATVs and put his hand out for Lucinda. She took a deep breath, held his hand, swung her leg over the seat, and sat. She wrapped her arms around his waist and laughed when he fired it up.

“Hang on to me, darlin’. We’re going to have some fun.”

“Don’t you wreck us, Rhett Morrison.”

He laughed. “I’ll do my best.”

She let out a little scream when he tore out of the barn. She held on as if her life depended on it, and who knew? Maybe it did.

The wind hit her in the face, so she pulled the scarf over her nose. She burrowed against Rhett’s back, then laughed when she saw Nate and Penelope fly past them, throwing snow up behind them. She heard Rhett laugh, then he gave it more gas, trying to catch up.

He caught them, passed them, then turned sharply to throw snow on them. Lucinda screamed again because she was sure they would tip over and end up in the snow. She glanced over her shoulder to see Nate and Penelope laughing as the snow hit them.

They rode across the ranch for over an hour before returning to the house. All were cold, but Lucinda had a wonderful time.

Rhett drove the ATV into the barn, stopped, and held her hand while she got off the machine. Then he did. He looked at her and grinned.

“Your cheeks and nose are red. I hope you had a good time.”

She wrapped her arms around his waist. “I had a ball.”

“Good. I did too.”

Nate drove into the barn, parked, helped his wife off the ATV, and quickly made their way to the house.

“I think a hot shower is calling my name,” Nate said.
