Love shakes her head emphatically. “No, of course not, but that isn’t a bad idea,” she teases, which has me lightly pushing at her shoulder.

“Don’t you dare.”

She raises her hands in surrender. “Fine, I’ll let you two fools fumble around until you finally come to terms with what you both feel,” she quips as she shrugs her shoulders. “And you, Hope, don’t think I haven’t noticed that you complain too much when a certain person is around.”

I see Hope’s look of surprise as she stares at Love, and then she shrugs. “Think what you will,” she mutters just as Shok and Drez approach with a bag.

“Anyone hungry?” Shok asks with a wink that is mostly covered by the hoodie covering his face.

“I’m starving. I could eat a whole forest,” I state as I smile at him.

“Well, I’m afraid we forgot about you,” he states with an innocent look.

“Guess I’ll just have to eat your lunch,” I tease, which has him grinning.

“You eat meat? Sure, I would like to see that.”

I had forgotten that he usually eats meat. Yuck, I can’t stomach the thought of eating animals, and also because our metabolism isn’t structured to eat something that needs so much digesting.

“Shok, if you didn’t get me food, I would shave all that hair that you’re so proud of off when you’re sleeping,” I threaten playfully, which has him grinning as he raises a hand before him as if warding me off.

“It’s not my fault. Blame Drez. He ate yours on the way. Shave his hair,” he says teasingly. “I dare you.” I look over at Drez to see him shaking his head at our silliness. When he sees my eyes on him, he raises a brow in question as if daring me to try.

“I can’t. He sleeps with one eye open,” I quip.

“How would you know that? Have you been staring at him while he sleeps?” Love asks innocently, which has my cheeks flushing with colour.

“I thought everyone was hungry?” Drez asks, which saves me from this embarrassing moment as everyone turns their attention to the food he is handing out in separate containers.

“Do you think they are going to be there?” Love suddenly asks. She does not need to say who she is talking about, as we all know she’s talking about our parents. To be honest, after everything I have heard, I worry that they have been taken, or worse, killed. I feel my stomach tightening at the thought that something might have happened to them.

“We don’t know yet what is going on, but one thing I know about the sovereigns is that they don’t get taken down easily. I know for a fact that they didn’t run away like they were saying when we arrived, but that something has happened. That is obvious, or they would be fighting this evil that has befallen us for all to see,” Trek says before taking a bite of his food.

“Maybe if we hadn’t come here, we would have destroyed the source of sound and all the shadows would have vanished,” I state, feeling angry at myself for having transported us here even if at the time I did not know what I was doing.

Love places her hand over mine and squeezes gently. “If you had not brought us here, we would all have died. We all know that those things were winning. I don’t know what they were, but what I know is we are not prepared to fight them.”

“They are stronger than the shadows, and light does not affect them,” Shok mutters.

“Well, we used everyone’s energy on them, and all it did was slow them down,” Hope says as she steals a chip from Trek, which surprises me because Werewolves don’t share their food with anyone except their mates.

“Well, we won’t find anything out by sitting here. We better start making our way there,” Drez says as he places his empty container in the bag.

“Is it still far from here?” I ask as I do the same. Picking up the bag, I start collecting everyone’s empty containers and placing them in the bag.

“Maybe another hour or so and we will be there,” Drez replies as I start making my way towards a bin that is just down the incline from where we are sitting. I hear the others talking as I stuff the bag into the bin, tensing when I hear footsteps approaching from my right.

“Well, hello there, beautiful,” a man says as he walks past. Glancing at him, I see that he is walking a beautiful dog that reminds me of Beast but in a much smaller version. I know that Love is missing Beast, as she has not stopped talking about him and how he must be worried that she is not back. The dog barks, hurrying towards me. “Guess Thor thinks you’re beautiful too,” the man says with a laugh as I stretch out my hand to scratch the dog’s head.

“Hello, Thor,” I say as the dog lowers his head, happy to be getting attention. “My sister would love your dog; she has one just like him but much bigger.”

“Is there a problem here?” I hear Drez grunt as he comes to stand next to me. I see the man tense, a surprised look on his face as he sees Drez.

“No, I’m just meeting Th—”

“Ohh,” Love interrupts as she comes rushing towards me. “You’re such a beautiful baby, aren’t you?” she says as she falls on her knees before the dog, who immediately forgets all about me and starts to lick Love’s hand.

“This is the sister I was telling you about,” I say to the man, who is looking at his dog happily lapping at Love. “His name is Thor,” I tell Love unnecessarily, because she is so entranced with Thor that she more than likely didn’t even hear me.
