“You look so pretty when you smile.”

A shiver ran down my spine because I recognized that voice. I turned around to face him. The man looking at me like I was something to eat was the same asshole from the club, the one who thought he could fuck me just because of the gold stamp on my wrist.

“Did you follow me here?” I glanced around the empty park.

“Isn’t that what you wanted?” He smirked. “You enjoy the chase, don’t you?” He prowled toward me as his gaze swept up and down my body. “I enjoy it too. I had to admit, I didn’t think he’d let you go so soon. I would’ve kept you a bit longer. But I’m glad. Now you and I get to have some fun.”

“Your stupid game ended at sunrise. Get over yourself.” I showed him the fading ink on my wrist. “This means nothing out here. And my debt was paid.”

My gut told me to run, but that would mean turning my back to him. And that felt like the wrong thing to do. I shot a quick glance at the yellow cab at the end of the street. If I could make it to it, I’d be safe.

“I decide when the game ends.” He smiled. “After the beating I took on your behalf, I deserve a bit of comforting. Don’t you think?”

“Fuck off.” I took off running toward the cab.

Behind me, the man laughed, then started counting. “Five, four, three, two, one. Ready or not, here I come.”

CHAPTER20

He Touched What's Mine

Donata

The thing about New York City was that people living here have seen it all. A girl in a long T-shirt, running barefoot down the street, in broad daylight, didn’t seem to shock anyone. If anything, I’d say they didn’t even notice me.

“Excuse me,” I mumbled a couple of times to get people to move out of the way as I weaved my way through the crowd. A quick glance behind me confirmed the hunter was still on my tail. He wasn’t chasing me like some maniac. Instead, he took long strides, keeping his gaze on me. I didn’t know who to ask for help. The guy chasing me was obviously someone with money and influence. I couldn’t get some random person involved in this ridiculous game.

Was this how Ava died? Was she also running from a hunter when she drove into a tree?

“Taxi.” I raised my hand when the driver glanced my way.

One hard look at me, and he quickly turned off his service light. Really? What the hell? I banged on his window. “Please, I need help.”

“I don’t want any trouble, girl.” He glared at my bare feet for a second, then returned to eating his lunch.

“I’ll pay double your fee.”

Shaking his head, he put down his sandwich, put his car in gear and peeled away from the curb.

“So rude.” The guy grabbed me by the arm. “Now that you’ve gotten that out of your system, let’s go somewhere quiet.”

“What do you want?” I yanked at my arm.

“What do I—?” He scoffed, scanning the block. A second later, he gripped my arm tighter and ushered me back to the sidewalk. “My girlfriend,” he explained when an old lady gave him a horrified look. “She forgot to take her meds.”

She eyed his tailored suit and quickly decided he was telling the truth. I searched the different faces, looking for someone who might be willing to help, but no one would meet my gaze.

“I didn’t get to introduce myself before. My name is Nathan. What’s your name, love?”

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with. If you hurt me, I will make you pay. Your entire family will pay.” I pulled away from him.

He scoffed and dragged me into an empty alley. The farther down we went, the darker it got. Random debris on the ground stuck to the soles of my feet in chunks and made it hard to walk. I swallowed my tears and covered my mouth to stifle the stench of urine and trash.

“Dumb bitch.” He slammed me against the wall. “We would’ve had a great time at the club. But now you pissed me off.”

“I’m not afraid of you.” I pushed off the grimy brick. God, this place was as disgusting as this asshole was.

“You should be. I could kill you, and no one would care.” He smirked.
