“You need this. You can’t have her death hanging over your head forever. Or are you ready to let that go?”

He stared at me intently, as if he were seriously considering the idea of letting Ava’s memory go. “No, I’m not. I can’t, Donata.”

“Then we have to do this. You said it yourself. There’s a good chance Ava’s killer was a hunter.”

“Did I?”

“You have to admit, there’s a connection there. Nathan knew about the stamp on her wrist. He knew she was a server. She wasn’t a random person off the street like I was.”

“That’s the part I don’t get. Ava was a fifth-grade teacher. Why was she part of something like that?”

“That’s what we have to find out. If that place and their fucked-up hunting games got her killed, they need to answer for their crime. Don’t you think it’s up to us to make sure what happened to Ava doesn’t happen to anyone else?” I placed one hand on his muscled chest and the other over his mouth. “And before you say that’s the cops’ job, you know that’s bullshit. I’m pretty sure the bouncer who gave me the stamp was a policeman.”

“Donata.” He wrapped his fingers around my wrist and peeled it off his mouth. “You keep sayingI’m pretty sure. That doesn’t qualify as evidence.”

“We have to start somewhere. I’ve watched enough murder mysteries to know that your uncle is now our prime suspect.” I braced my hands on my hips.

“Prime suspect? Listen to you. Why would he want to kill Ava? Even if he knew about my relationship with her, he didn’t have to kill her. I can date whoever I want.” His gaze shifted from my face down to my bare legs. “I can’t tell if you’re making sense because you’re right or because I’m too distracted by how good you look in my shirt.”

“You’re not playing fair.” I shuffled back when he bent down to kiss me. “Now you’re just trying to distract me.”

“Can’t a man just want to fuck his fiancée?” He captured my mouth.

Before I knew it, I was on the bed with Luca’s body nestled between my legs and his muscled arms on either side of my face. The man was a beautiful distraction. I ran my hands over his abs, then pulled him down to me.

He nibbled on my neck and moved down to suck on my nipples. I was beginning to recognize that as his signature move. His mouth on my skin felt like heaven. And now that we had an idea of where to start looking to put a stop to Don Gallo’s red wedding plans, Luca and I had a chance at having a life together.

“Just so we’re clear,” he whispered in my ear, “we’re not going back to that place.”

“Yeah, we’ll talk about it later.”

CHAPTER24

The Gala is Tonight

Luca

“I can get used to this.” Donata stirred next to me, while the sun’s rays played with the highlights in her hair and the tips of her eyelashes.

“Which part?” I ran my hand up and down her bare arm.

“Waking up next to you.” Her sleepy smile was the sexiest thing I’d ever seen. “And the sound of your voice. You’re not as grumpy in the morning.”

“Grumpy?” I chuckled, wrapping my arms around her. “I’ll show you grumpy.”

“We don’t have time for that.” She snuggled closer, then her eyes flew open. “Omigod. We don’t have time. Get up.” She struggled against the hold I had on her. “I’m serious.”

“What could possibly be so serious at this hour?” I released her and fell back on my pillow. “It’s seven in the morning.”

Normally, I was up by five. But since Donata moved in a few days ago, I found myself wanting to stay in bed longer. I glanced over to her side, just as she tossed the covers over and got to her feet. The sight of her shapely ass reminded me why sleeping in was my new favorite thing.

“What’s the rush?”

“They’re on their way.” She picked up her phone and glared at the screen. “We have under two hours.”

“Slow down.” I glanced down at my raging erection before I met her gaze. “Who’s they?”

“The boys are on their way.”
