“It’s your daughter’s safety I’m worried about.”

“What are you talking about?” Dad sounded irritated, bordering on angry.

“No one opens their door until another bodyguard is there to open Anita’s door.”

“Is it really that serious?” Judith asked.

“Is what that serious?” Dad asked.

“There are rumors about threats against Jean-Claude,” Judith said.

“What rumors?” Dad asked.

“Fredrick, I told you that there were possible threats against Jean-Claude from some of the vampire hate groups.”

“That was just one of those gossip sites, Judith. It’s never true.”

“Unfortunately, Dad, this one’s true.”

“Marrying this vampire is endangering your physical safety, on top of your immortal soul!”

I shook my head. “No, Dad, I’ve gotten threats for years.”

“Why?” he asked.

“I’m an executioner, Dad; some of the people I’ve killed had families, loved ones.”

“Oh,” he said, as if it had never occurred to him before.

“Some of the vampires don’t want Jean-Claude marrying me because I’m a necromancer and I’ve killed a lot of them over the years.”

“See, this wedding is endangering you.”

I turned in my seat, unbuckling the seat belt so I could turn and see him better now that the car wasn’t moving. “Jean-Claude has more death threats now, because he’s marrying me.”

“Why?”

Nicky answered, “Anita has the highest kill count of any preternatural marshal, Mr. Blake. She’s like a bogeyman to the supernatural set, especially the vampires.”

“They see their king marrying me as him betraying them,” I said.

“And the human hate groups see Anita marrying Jean-Claude as her betraying humanity,” Nicky said.

“You must love each other very much to go up against all that,” Judith said.

I looked at her, and her face looked soft, genuine, like she meant it. “Yeah, only true love gets you through shit like this.”

“Must you cuss constantly?” my father said.

I looked at his unfriendly face and had to resist saying a string of curse words he hadn’t heard from me yet. “Must you constantly correct how I speak?”

“Anita’s life is in danger, and you’re more worried about her vocabulary,” Nicky said.

“That is not true,” Dad said.

“That’s how it’s coming across, Dad.”

He blinked and looked at Judith. Apparently she could read his expression better than I could because she answered his silent question. “It does seem like we could forgive Anita’s language just this once and concentrate on the threats against her and her husband-to-be.”
