“Yeah, he doesn’t like blonds. And fine, show the pictures to Olaf, he won’t come to town without you and you’ll warn me first.” I was suddenly tired in a way that a nap wasn’t going to fix. “I have to check on Wicked and Truth at the hospital, I don’t have the spoons for dealing with this right now.”

“Back up, the Wicked Truth are Jean-Claude’s main bodyguards. I know he’s not hurt, or you would have started with that, but what could possibly send both of them to the hospital?”

“Holy water, meant for Jean-Claude.”

He was quiet for a second on the phone, then said, “Tell me.”

I gave him the thumbnail version. “I’ll fill in more details later, but I’m supposed to help Wicked and Truth by talking to the doctors, and telling you everything will just exhaust me more.”

“Telling me can wait, I really hope the doctors can help them.”

“Me, too,” I said.

“I’ll tell Donna to light a candle for them.”

“I’ll take all the help I can get.”

My phone beeped, letting me know someone else was trying to get through; I checked, and it was Echo. “It’s Echo, she went ahead to the hospital.”

“Go, take care of your people.” He hung up.

I hit the button and was talking to Echo. “The doctors are wanting to do things that will injure Truth further.”

“Tell them no, and that I’m almost there.”

“You are not family; they will try to kick you out as they have us.”

“I’m the vampire expert.”

“They might listen to that,” she said.

Nicky said, “Tell them you’re their girlfriend.”

I glanced up at him and nodded. “Do girlfriends count as family?”

“I don’t know.”

“Technically you live in the same house with them,” Ethan said from the front seat.

“How about live-in girlfriends?” I asked.

“Excellent idea,” she said. “I’ll tell the doctor, that should help, but you must all clean off the holy water before you touch the Wicked Truth.”

“Ask the doctor if they have a shower we can borrow, and maybe some scrubs, we can’t risk the clothes touching them either.”

Fortune’s voice was on the phone. “We’re on it.” I heard a man’s voice I didn’t know, and Fortune whispered, “It’s the doctor, get here ASAP.”

“Is something else wrong with Truth and Wicked?” I asked; my pulse filled my throat and let me know I still had enough adrenaline to push past the tiredness.

“No,” she whispered, “just a doctor that thinks he knows vampires better than the vampire talking to him.”

“We’re almost there,” Ethan said.

I started to repeat it, but Fortune said, “I heard. We’re still in the ER, come find us before my beautiful wife starts yelling or worse.” She hung up, and Ethan drove a little faster as we saw the sign that glowedEmergency Entrance.

Ethan was stillstruggling to find a parking spot. Big surprise that the emergency room was packed on the weekend. “No, you can’t get out until we’ve parked and can all go into the hospital together.”
