“Sleep doesn’t help us heal like it does for humans and wereanimals,” Truth said.

“Dead flesh does not heal,” Wicked added.

“A trade-off with the whole not-aging thing, I guess,” I said.

“Tonight, the trade-off seems less than ideal,” Wicked replied.

I looked at him. “Yeah,” I said.

“Maybe the doctor will have some ideas,” Ethan said.

“Anita,” Nicky asked, “why did Micah want you to have leopards with you?”

“I’m not sure.”

Nicky looked at Ru. “Did Micah give you a reason for Anita needing leopards?”

“He just told us to go to Anita and stay with her.”

“Did Rodina ask why?” I asked.

“He called me.”

“And you didn’t ask,” I said.

He shook his head.

“I need to call Micah and find out what’s going on.”

“He wouldn’t have sent them to you without a good reason,” Nicky said.

“Yeah, and thanks for asking the question for me. I wouldn’t have caught it.”

“Part of my job.”

“Ethan, stay with them while the doctor is in here; don’t let him put anything on their injuries until you check with me.”

“Nicky, Ru, with me.” I went for the door and some privacy for the phone call. I didn’t look back at the Wicked Truth. It wouldn’t have helped, and right now it hurt to see them like that, because it was my fault. We’d have had more wereanimals around the vampires. They might have been hit by the water, but not this badly. They sacrificed themselves to save Jean-Claude. They’d done their job at great cost. I just hoped we could figure out a way to pay that cost, or the guilt was going to gnaw on me forever.

I walked to thefar end of the hallway by the restrooms to call Micah. I was trying to get out of supernatural earshot. I leaned in the corner by the ladies’ room, which made me realize that using it before I went back to the room wasn’t a bad idea. Funny how you don’t think of necessities during emergencies until something reminds you.

I called Micah, and he answered like he’d been waiting for it. “Anita, it’s good to hear your voice.” He sounded so relieved.

“Jesus, Micah, I’m sorry I didn’t think that you aren’t hooked into me the way everyone else is; I should have called you from the car on the way to the hospital.”

“ ‘Should’ isn’t a useful word, but yes, I’d like more phone calls in the future.”

“Want to FaceTime?” I asked.

“Actually, yes.”

“I’ll hang up and call you back.”

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you more.” Then I hung up so I could call him back with visuals.
