“I’m sorry you missed it, too, but your negotiations on the WestCoast stopped the hostilities between two shapeshifter groups before it erupted into all-out war. You saved a lot of lives.”

“I know that the work I do with the coalition is important, but you’re important, my life in St. Louis is important, and I feel like I’m missing too much of it lately.”

“You have been gone a lot,” I said.

“I am trying to delegate more.”

“But so far none of your delegates have your gift at negotiations.”

“Socrates can do it,” he said.

“But you gave him time off to help his wife with the newest baby,” I said.

“They’ve got a six-year-old, a toddler, and the baby; if I went out of town on you with all that plus your job you’d never forgive me.”

“You’re going to be lucky to get one kid out of me, three is not happening.”

“You know I believe that it’s your body, your choice,” he said.

“I do, and it’s just one of the things that I love about you.”

“Some of the men in our lives say that I can afford to be generous since I can’t have children of my own.”

“The fact that you had a vasectomy years before we met just makes me feel safer with you,” I said.

“Tell me and I’ll get one for you,” Nicky said.

“You have but to give the order,” Ru said.

I looked at them and knew they meant it. “I don’t know what to say to that. It hadn’t even occurred to me.”

“You can think about it later, Anita,” Micah said.

“He’s right,” Nicky said, “you still need to heal the Wicked Truth.”

“How badly are they hurt?” Micah asked.

“Bad enough that I don’t know if I can heal it.”

Nicky said, “She’s healed life-threatening injuries before. These aren’t that bad.”

“It’s not like you to be this doubtful about your abilities, Anita,” Micah said.

“I healed knife wounds once on one vampire, all the rest have been wereanimals. I’ve never healed anything this serious on a vampire before.”

“Jean-Claude described the injuries to me, would you leave them like that without even trying?”

“No, of course not, but…I just. I don’t know, I just don’t feel like myself tonight.”

“Is it seeing your family?” he asked.

I said, “Maybe.”

Nicky said, “Yes.”

I frowned at him.

“Don’t let them make you doubt yourself, Anita,” Micah said.
