“Let’s take Deimos’s power away from him.”

“I am supposed to have delivered you to him by now. He will know something is wrong.”

“Take me to Jean-Claude, let me reestablish our connection. That keeps all of our power out of Deimos’s reach.”

“You are too weak to offer me such bargains, Anita.”

“Join us, Trappolino. Help us defeat Deimos and we’ll help you find your own power.”

“But, Anita, I already have my own power.”

We weren’t floating anymore. I was lying down on…grass. Trappolino was lying beside me on the grass, propped up on one elbow, staring down at me.

“Fuck,” I said.

“I told you, Anita, I don’t want to do that with anyone.”

“So that much was true,” I said.

“I have told you very few lies.”

“I should have known that no vampire could hover that long in one place; it’s just not possible.”

“Deimos wanted me to test the waters; if you had been completely proof against my vampire wiles, then he would have had you killed.”

“But you mind-fucked me and I don’t even know at what point you did it.”

He smiled and trailed one dark finger down the side of my face.

“Did you really change your appearance or was that illusion?”

His smile widened. “My secret to keep.”

“My answer to discover,” I said.

“Exactly.”

“So now that you’ve mind-fucked me better and more thoroughly than any vampire in years, what’s next?”

“I let them take you to Deimos as planned.”

“Do you want him to be more powerful?”

“I have no choice, Anita.”

“There are always choices,” I said.

“I convinced you that we floated forever, when you as a vampire expert know that is impossible. All your weapons are gone, even your armor, and even saying that to you there is no panic, no frantic hand movements searching for them.”

I tried to be upset, but I couldn’t seem to manage it. I felt distant and peaceful almost. “You sneaky bastard, you drugged me.”

“I did capture you with my gaze.”

“But you didn’t keep me under with your vampire wiles.”

“I manipulated your mind while you were under the influence.”

“Like manipulating a person’s dreams,” I said.
