When his breakfast tray had been pushed aside, he reached once again for my hand, as though every moment spent not touching me was a wasted one. He looked down at our linked fingers with a crooked smile that I’d never loved more.

‘So, the surgeon didn’t mention it, but I have to ask: am I suffering from amnesia?’

I felt a heart’s skip of panic. His head CT scan had been clear; there’d been no serious cranial injuries.

‘No. Why do you ask that?’

Finn’s smile was broader now. ‘I was just wondering how I managed to forget that we’d got married.’ In explanation, he held up his left hand. The gold wedding band glinted in the sunlight streaming in through the hospital window. Storm Edna, having done her worst, had simply disappeared overnight.

‘Ahh, that,’ I said, feeling my cheeks grow warm. ‘I slipped that on to your finger just before they put you in the ambulance.’

His eyes clouded, and I knew he felt bad that I’d witnessed first-hand the horror he’d lived through.

‘I wanted you to see it the second you woke up. I wanted you to know that it didn’t matter whether we’d had the ceremony or not. That we’re just as married as it’s possible for two people to be.’

‘And if I hadn’t woken up…?’

The sun was still shining, but it felt as though a dark cloud had passed across it.

‘Then it would have been even more important that you knew how much I loved you and that in my heart I would always be your wife.’

‘I wouldn’t have gone too far ahead,’ Finn said softly. ‘In fact, I don’t think I’ll want to be separated from you ever again.’

He took my hand in his. ‘I love you, Gemma Douglas.’

‘Still can’t get my name right,’ I said with a smile, as he pulled me in for a kiss.
