“I’m a big boy. I can handle a kiss, Sadie.” The fire in his gaze scorched my soul.

I needed this from him.

I wanted to feel safe again.

The world stilled around us as the longing intensified in Zack’s gaze. The noise of Elena and Jaxson speaking in the other room faded into a low hum. Zack’s eyes stayed on mine as he searched for some sort of soundless permission in a silent and crazy conversation that only we understood.

My pulse quickened as I thought about all the times I had wanted to be held by Zack this last month, all the times I wanted to be kissed by him. But I had chased him away.

Zack reached out and brushed a stray hair from my cheek, but his fingers lingered on the curve of my jaw before trailing down my neck. A shiver of anticipation ran through me from the gentle touch of his hand.

I took a slow, shaky breath as desire filled every cell in my body. My eyes fell to his lips in a silent permission. Zack nodded ever so slightly and leaned in, cupping my chin with his fingers.

Zack slid his hands behind me, scooping me into him as his lips fleetingly brushed against mine. My breath hitched from the heat of our lips connecting as he waited for my permission.

I wriggled my body in a quiet invitation as his mouth met mine, hungrier the second time. His kiss deepened, becoming more passionate with each passing moment. I parted my lips, mingling our breaths and shared longing.

It was as if time were suspended and nothing else mattered as his tongue playfully tasted me, kissing me with more emotion than I’d ever felt. He ran his hands up my spine as a wave of goosebumps cascaded along my skin.

He tasted so good, so familiar.

The comfort and security I felt in his arms brought me right back to that first day I’d met him.

In the warehouse.

I breathed in quickly and opened my eyes as Zack’s mouth parted from mine.

“I’m so sorry, Sadie. I thought…”

“Don’t apologize. I wanted it. I still want it.”

He nodded slowly as I looped my arms around his neck and scooted all the way onto his lap.

My mouth touched down on his once more, and I knew this would be the last kiss we shared.

Chapter Ten

Zack

I should be elated about the kiss I shared with Sadie, but I knew there was a meaning behind it that I didn’t understand. I glanced over at my brother, who’d just received confirmation that Carmela was still on the East Coast.

Jaxson, Elena, and Sadie all bundled up and took a walk out back. I didn’t like the idea, but her threat was theoretically thousands of miles away, and Jaxson could certainly take care of anyone who surprised them.

And it gave me a chance to speak with my brother. “I think Sadie’s hiding something.”

“You think she’s seeing someone?”

My expression fell. I hadn’t even considered that.

“Oh. My bad.” Ian laughed. “I’m sure that’s not it. I thought maybe…”

“Thanks for that.” I shook my head and laughed. “I hadn’t really given that a thought, but I guess considering she broke up with me over a month ago, it could be the cause.”

Ian laughed nervously and shook his head. “Nah. I doubt it. So, what’s up? What makes you think she’s keeping something from you?”

“I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s like half-thoughts spilling out of her mouth, interrupted guesses, partial backtracks. It’s all just… unlike her.”

“You don’t think she had something to do with the break-in, do you?”
