“Hey now, Sugar Beans. That’s my job right there. Don’t get it twisted.” Zack’s voice boomed through the air as my giggling got worse.

He pulled Sugar Beans off me and put out his hands for me. “I swear you're more gorgeous than when you left for school this morning.”

“You’re just trying to get me to lick you like Sugar Beans.” I chuckled as he pulled me into his arms.

Zack closed the gap between us instantly. “Is that a bad thing?” His mouth nestled into the crook of my neck, and he breathed in.

“I missed you,” he said softly. “These classes are brutal.”

I nodded, feeling the strength of his body holding me tight.

It was moments like this when I knew it was all worth it, the nights away in Seattle while I finished my degree and traveled back on the weekends. The nights we slept in our separate beds while I crashed from studying too much. But thankfully, my classes were Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I had Friday through Monday back in Granite Peak.

“Mmm, you feel so good next to me, baby.” His hands slid from my back to my head, his fingers moving through my hair. “Good to see you again.”

His hazel eyes locked on mine, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“I missed you,” I muttered, feeling weak in the knees just being next to him.

Zack bent down and kissed me. His warm lips pressed against mine, sending a buzz of anticipation for what awaited me this weekend. I parted my lips as his tongue tasted me. He let out a little groan of satisfaction before Sugar Beans jumped on us, barking.

I chuckled as his mouth parted from mine. “I hope there’s more of that tonight.”

“I still can’t believe you named our first puppy together after Granite Beans,” he joked.

“Hey, you taught me to turn sour things into something sweet, and Sugar Beans is the sweetest there is.”

His gaze smoldered as he took a step back. Zack’s low-slung jeans made my heart skip a beat as he stretched toward the sky with the sixty-pound retriever in his hands like she was as light as a paperweight.

“Who’s a good girl? Who’s my Sugar Beans?” he asked, putting her back on the ground.

She took off toward the barn.

“It looks incredible,” I said, taking a step closer.

“I’m glad we went with red.”

“Me too. It really looks awesome this time of year too.”

He looped his arm around my waist and brought me in tighter.

“How’s your leg?” I asked, leaning my head on his shoulder.

“It’s a leg.” He laughed, shaking his head.

“Are you sure you should really be up on that ladder?” I asked, turning to face him.

“You ask me that after I framed and built the entire barn?”

I grinned. “Well, when you put it that way, I guess one last time on a ladder isn’t that big of a deal.”

He swept a kiss across my forehead and smiled. “Do you ever stop worrying?”

“Nope, but isn’t that why you love me?”

“Among the reasons,” he said, tangling his fingers with mine.

“Want to take a seat on a hay bail?” I asked. “These boots are all for being cute, but not actually booting.”
