She tilted the gun slightly before firing. The powerful shot reverberating off the walls, silencing even my most insistent thoughts.

The feeling of the bullet forcing its way through the man as I held him was something I’d never experienced before, but the sigh she let out afterward made it all worth it.

I pushed the body to the ground and took a step closer to her.

“Congratulati—”

A shrill sound came from her tracker. We both looked down at it.

My heart stopped in my chest.

“What?” I asked. “No, that was a victim—”

I looked down to the supposed killer. They didn’t have a mask.Where the hell—?

I stormed to the corners of the room, peeking behind the pallets of boxes. I couldn’t hold in my gasp when I caught the bird mask and dead body crumpled to the ground, blood pooling underneath.

Next to the body lie a bright red, glowing Seeker mask.

“Shit, Vic, the Hider is—Vic?”

She was staring at the body on the ground, unmoving.

I took a few strides back to her but paused when her head slowly swung up to mine. Her mind was spinning. I could see it in her eyes. She was thinking of a way to get us out of this.

“Vic, it’s okay, we will find a way,” I promised and took a step forward.

The arm that was holding her gun swung up… pointing right at me.

No. She wouldn’t. Why?

Why are you letting me use you like this? Her words rang through my mind.

I stuck by what I said… but I’d always envisioned myself by her side. There to help her. Serve her.

But I never thought–

“Vic?” I asked. “What—” I swallowed the knot in my throat. “What are you doing?”

I held my hands up and slowly fell to my knees.

I wasn’t going to run. Not from her, Icouldn't.

A pain so powerful ripped through me that it caused my breath to catch and my eyes to tear. I wanted more time with her. But there was no way I would stop her.

Not when the only thing keeping her from her prize wasme.

“Vic—please listen to me. I promised that I wou—”

She took a few steps forward, the hurt and pain clouding my mind made way for fear. I didn’t tell my body to move, but before I knew it my hands were on the floor, dragging myself away from her.

Tratourius body.My mind wanted to sit still. Wanted to wait patiently for her to shoot me and get it over with.

But my heart hurt.Hurt so bad that my body acted on it’s own.

“Please,” I begged. “Don’t do this. We mean something to each other, right? You can trust me to—”

“I have to win this, Kohl,” she said, her voice sounding colder than I’d ever heard. “This is what they do. They put us against each other. You know that all too well.”
