He let out a sigh and ran his hands down his suit, chasing away the wrinkles that had formed. He was so casual about something so mind altering that it caused my hackles to rise.

Whoever this man had pretended to be… it was becoming increasingly clear that he was the opposite.

He was dangerous.Dirty.He had a lot of money to control whoever he wanted, but how far was he willing to go?

Far enough to try and kill Russell,my brain shot at me.

“Because I had people watching you and the other… I guess you should be addressing me as your father-in-law,” he said, a small smile spreading across his face. “Though, if I’m being honest, I tried everything in my power to make sure that connection would never be made public. And when I found out you were in the Secret Service?” He let out an exaggerated huff. “It was too good a chance to pass up.”

I was going to barf. I couldn’t believe it, but then, slowly, I started to see the features he and Russell shared.

“You wanted your own son dead?” I asked, horror rooting in my stomach.

“His mother was a whore I paid for a single night,” he said with a shrug, as if his words were not as awful as they were. “If I am going to be the next president, I can’t have an illegitimate son running out there, assistant to a wannabe warlord no less. Fucking nuisance. You know, people should be glad that I’m cleaning up the trash like this.”

“But I—”

“Enough. Next question,” he said. “I heard a rumor that you have a very handy USB on you. I need to know where it is and who knows about what you have on there.”

Jonson’s words hit me like a truck.

Alec’s group is so intertwined with the FBI that every time I tried to get a case going, it would lead nowhere.

It was never the FBI that kept putting a stop to this… it washim.

The door opened behind me. I whipped around, hoping to God it was Quinn, but instead I found myself face-to-face with Ryan.

All the times I had seen him so scared of the senator now made sense. He was never just a secret service agent.

“You fucking rat!” I hissed at him. His eyes stayed firm on the senator, not even looking in my direction. The dismissal caused anger to shoot through me.

I took a step to the side, not wanting to be in between the two men.

How the fuck am I going to get out of this?

Thoughts whirled around my head. I imagined diving for Ryan’s gun. I could take one, maybe two down… but then what?

What about those three that were probably waiting outside for me?

“Do you need assistance, sir?” Ryan asked, his eyes finally looking over at me before darting to the man behind me.

Assistance? Assistance with what?

“Hold her for me.”

His hands gripped my arms with enough force to pull a whine from me. He was too fast for me to even think of dodging. I bucked against him, trying to throw him off, but his grip was so tight that I couldn’t keep it up for long.

“Ryan? What the fuck—”

The senator gripped my chin, forcing me to look at him. His slimy fingers caused a shiver of disgust to run through me.

“Tell me where it is, and I’ll let you out of here alive,” he said. A smile spread across his face, showing me a dazzling set of teeth.

Just like Russell, he was a monster with an innocent mask that caused everyone around him to relax. No one could feel the darkness lingering beneath his skin unless you were looking for it. No one could feel just how disgusting his touch could feel unless you knew how much blood the hands were stained with.

How did I not see it before?

“I fucking doubt that,” I hissed at him. His grip on my jaw caused the entire lower half of my face to throb with pain. “What do you think you can do, huh? Kill me? If so, you’ll never get what you want, and I have no intention of bowing down to shit likeyou.”
