“Will gave me a ride,” I tell him. “We need to talk.”

He stuffs his hands into the front pocket of his jeans. “Uh, okay.”

“But not here. I have to show you something and I can’t show you inside.”

He raises an eyebrow but follows me off the front porch. Will waves at us before driving off, and I lead Parker into the woods. I follow a path, not knowing for sure where it leads. If I get lost, Parker will help me find my way back.

Unless he decides to leave me out here once he sees the real me.

No, he’s not going to do that.

I swallow the lump in my throat.

“Your heart is racing really fast,” Parker comments, now walking beside me. “You’re not going to pass out, are you?”

“I’m not that fragile,” I say.

“Aren’t you?” he asks.

It’s true, Parker has seen me at my worst a lot since I moved here.

And he hasn’t run away yet. So maybe there is hope.

We reach a clearing in the trees that is large enough for me to show Parker my wings. Part of me thinks I should just reveal them, but I don’t want to scare him.

“I haven’t told you everything about me. I know more than I’ve let on.” I worry my bottom lip between my teeth, trying to decide where to start.

“You weren’t surprised by the fire.” Parker rubs a hand at the back of his neck. “When we told you that you went up in flames, you didn’t act surprised at all.”

“I’ve gotten used to the fire.” I suppose that is as good of a place to start as any. I close my eyes, letting the heat envelop me. I teleport about five feet away from where we were standing. When I open my eyes, Parker is staring at me with wide eyes.

“You can teleport in fire,” he says.

“Yeah.” I walk closer to him. “I found out that one day when I was at your house. Will didn’t want me here. And I teleported home. It’s how I got there so fast.”

“And it’s why you smelled like smoke.” Parker steps closer to me. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Will made it seem as if I would be sent away. I thought once you figured out what I am, you’d send me away to live with my own kind.”

He shakes his head. “That won’t happen.”

“I know that now.”

“Is that why you wanted to be out here? Because of the fire?” he asks.

I shake my head. “I’m not hiding anymore. I want to show you the real me, but I don’t want you to be scared.”

“Show me,” Parker says.

Not wanting to stall any longer, I will my wings to appear. I keep my head down, scared to see Parker’s reaction. But when I feel his hand brush against my wing, I shiver, finally looking up. When our eyes meet, my skin tingles and a warmth rushes over my body.

Parker’s eyes widen as he takes a step closer to me. “It makes so much sense.”

“What makes so much sense?” I ask.

But he doesn’t answer. Instead, he kisses me.

When Parker’s lips touch mine, my heart races even faster. I feel a jolt go through my entire body from his touch. He puts his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. I want to ask him what’s going on—why is he kissing me? But to do that, I’d have to stop kissing him, which is not something I want to do.
