“Yeah… I just woke up. What time is it?”

“It’s six. I thought you’d be up since you said you have to be at the dog rescue by 6:30.”

“Oh my gosh, I must have forgot to set my alarm or turned it off in my sleep. I gotta get dressed. What did you need?”

“I was calling in response to your text last night about fundraiser ideas for the dog rescue that you’re serving time at.”

Liza turned on the speaker phone while pulling on jeans. “I prefer the termvolunteering. Anyway… Miller Brooks runs the dog rescue—you remember him from high school right? He needs to raise ten thousand dollars. Do you have any ideas? You’re so good at this stuff.”

“I don’t know anything about dog rescues.”

“Yeah, but you and Chase have done those homeless benefit concerts. I heard Chase raving about your creativity at Thanksgiving.” Liza threw two string cheeses in her purse before locking her apartment door. “Can you stop by the rescue sometime this week? Maybe being there will bring inspiration.”

Liza heard someone who she assumed was Chase in the background. Maggie giggled.

“What are you two love birds doing up so early?” Liza asked as she climbed into her car.

“Oh we’re just going out for a quick coffee date before more wedding business.”

“You guys are disgustingly adorable. Any chance you have time?”

“Ah… I should be able to come tomorrow morning. I think I’m free between 8 am and 11 am.”

“If you can come around eight that’d be perfect.”

“I’ll pencil you in,” Maggie replied.

“Thank you! Have I told you that you’re the best sister in the world lately?”

“No. You’ve never told me that.”

“Well, you’ve only recently earned the title.”

Liza could sense Maggie’s eye roll through the phone.

“On another note. Not sure if you remember, but I have this little thing called a wedding happening soon and you never got back to me about your plus-one. Do you still need it? I have to give a final guest count to the caterer tomorrow.”

Liza paused.Shoot. I really wanted to bring Dr. Sam, but haven’t quite locked that down. But, I will, right? Confidence, Liza.“Oh sorry. Just waiting for confirmation from my plus-one. I’ll let you know soon.”

“Would you like to share this mystery plus-one’s name?”

Nope. Not all. Not yet.

“It’s a surprise. Oh sorry, almost at the rescue. Gotta go!” Liza quickly pressed end. The plus-one situation was something she’d have to handle later. She was excited to tell Miller she deserved extra credit for helping him with his rescue fundraiser problem.Hopefully he’ll be okay with the fact that I read his desk notes…

Chapter 10

Miller

Millerblaredmusicwhilecleaning out dog kennels. His movements were sharp like his agitated mental state. I wasn’t jealous of Dr. Sam. Yeah, maybe in high school I developed a slight… attraction to Liza, but I was smart—not inhuman. It’s only natural to notice Liza’s dimples and her flowy hair. Besides, that was high school—before Abigail. Abigail is perfect. She’s quiet and a little edgy, but sweet in her own way.

Miller’s thoughts were interrupted by the sight of Liza walking in. She gave a small wave and went right for a pooper scooper. Following behind her, he grabbed an extra one.

Once outside, they scooped in silence. Not surprisingly, Liza was the first one to speak.

“How’s your back today?”

“Stiff but better. Thanks for…” Miller trailed off as he said, “bringing me to see Dr. Sam.”
