“Yeah.” He’s still staring down at his phone.

“I’m sorry, man. Do you need to go? What can I do?” I know he wasn’t close to her, but she was still his family.

“No. I’m all good. She asked me to stop by because my grandma’s lawyer sent me a letter to their place via certified mail.”

“Any idea what it could be about?”

“Hard to tell. She never met me, so who knows.” He shoves his phone back into his pocket. “Why are you over here with me when you should be with your wife?”

“Good question.” I reach over and pat his shoulder. “You sure you’re good?”

“Yeah, just weird, but I’ll find out sooner or later what’s up.”

“I’m here.”

“I know, man. Appreciate that. Now go. Your wife is waiting for you.”

I grin as I stand and make my way to my wife. “Sorry, ladies, but I need to dance with my wife.” I make eye contact with Maddox, and he fires up the tunes as I pull Emerson into my arms.

“How long until we kick them out?” I ask her.

“Roman!” she scolds. “We are not kicking our guests out.”

“I need to make love to my wife.”

“We have the rest of our lives, husband.”

“That we do, wife,” I agree. I kiss her, slow and sweet, ignoring the cheers and catcalls of our family. I block it all out and memorize this moment. I know in fifty years, when we’re sitting on the back porch watching our grandchildren play, I’ll still remember this. The day she changed my life by changing her last name.

We fought to get where we are. I’m grateful that everything worked out. It was a bumpy road, but our hearts led us to where we are today.

I can’t wait to see what life has in store for us.
