Gutierrez grinned.

The officer with him said, “Just sounds like a lot of paperwork.”

Liam nodded, since the guy wasn’t wrong. He was about to break off and go into the house to see if crime scene had found anything else when the other officer said, “Sarge?”

“Yeah?” Liam didn’t know this guy, but his name badge read “Allman.”

“That woman you were with, the one that works for Vanguard?” A different light shone in this guy’s eyes. “Is she…seeing anyone?”

Liam stared at the guy for a long second. Then he turned and stepped into the house.

Behind him, he heard a yelp, and then someone said, “Idiot.”

Liam found the crime scene tech. Before he could say anything, his phone rang. “One sec.”

The tech nodded and got back to work. Since she probably wanted to get on with her job and not be here all nightandinto tomorrow processing the scene.

Liam stepped back into the hall and frowned at the number on the screen. Not one of his saved contacts. “Sergeant O’Connell.”

“Liam O’Connell?”

“Yes.”

“The registered owner of a red Ford.” The person listed his truck model and license plate number.

“That’s me.”

“I’m calling from Pro-Tec. Your vehicle’s GPS system alerted us to a crash, and we’re confirming whether you require assistance at this time.”

Cold ran through him. “I wasn’t the one driving.” He turned and strode to the door and then out. “I need a ride.” He motioned to Gutierrez.

The officer whirled and started to jog to a patrol car.

“Do you know anything about what happened?” Liam got in the passenger side, gripping the phone while he buckled up.

“We have your vehicle’s location.”

Liam put the call on speaker.

The dispatcher said, “I take it you aren’t the driver currently.”

He’d read that right. “A friend borrowed it. I need the location. I’m a Benson PD officer, and I’m dispatching to the location.”Roxie.Was she hurt? They needed to get therenowand find out.

“We have police and ambulance on their way already.”

“Great.” Liam tried to let go of some of his tension. “Tell me where to go.”

He had to give his badge number, but the dispatcher told them the address. Gutierrez flipped on lights and sirens and headed there. Liam gripped his phone and ran his hand down his pant leg over his knee to get rid of some of the sweat.Roxie.He’d let her go alone, and now she’d crashed?

“Almost there.”

Yeah, Gutierrez would go far in the department. A good guy plus a solid cop equaled a stellar combination.

He pulled into a parking lot and Liam got a look at his truck on the far side of an ambulance. A fire truck currently battled a fire in the flooring warehouse store she’d crashed into.Roxie.He shoved the door open and ran to the scene commander. “Did you get the driver out?”

“Sergeant.” The fire captain lifted his chin. “We’re working on locating her.”

Liam frowned. “What do you mean? She was driving.”
