Eventually, Liam would go see the man, to have the satisfaction of seeing his father’s killer behind bars. But when he did, would he be able to keep himself from killing that man?

He pushed out a long breath and squeezed the bridge of his nose.

“I love you, honey.”

“I know, Mom.”

“You need to convince that girl to marry you. Then I’ll be able to worry about you a little less because I’ll know you’re in good hands. Just like Conrad with his sweet Amanda.”

Liam leaned over and kissed her forehead again. “Love you, too.”

“And go see Rory. I need to know he’s all right, and I just don’t want to go to Alaska. Unless it’s on a cruise.”

He chuckled.

The door opened, and he heard a man say, “Whoops, sorry.”

Liam twisted, which felt great.Liar.Bob Davis stood at the door, a bandage around his head.

“Should you be out of bed?” Liam asked.

Bob waved a hand. “I feel fine.”

Liam got up. “Come in. I was just about to go hassle the nurses for an update.”

Bob’s cheeks pinked.

Liam looked at his mom. “Stay out of trouble.”

She chuckled. “No promises.”

And no need for him to get involved with her love life. But if she were ever to date again—or get remarried—the fact it was a guy he respected didn’t hurt. Even though Bob had been convicted as a corrupt cop, he’d done his time and now worked a job that helped make the world better by bringing justice where none had been found.

Like helping his mom learn the truth about her husband’s death.

He spotted a crowd of Vanguard employees in the waiting area outside of surgery. Clare and Gage saw him right away, stood, and came over.

Gage held out his hand, and they hugged. Clare kissed his cheek.

“Any word?”

Gage said, “Not yet. But Jasper told me Raphi has been booked. His business is decimated. Karina is telling the prosecutor everything. And the feds are descending on Hurstwhile. Everything they’re into is going to be exposed. Internal Affairs will comb through the lives of the two officers killed at the center. No one wants dirty cops, so it’s up to the department to figure out what made them go bad.”

“It’s over?” Everything he’d been working at for years was finally done. Not just that, but his father’s memory was finally at peace. There was no longer any suspicion that his father had been dirty.

And Roxie never had to be afraid.

Clare nodded, then Gage.

Clare said, “And when Roxie is back on her feet, I’ve got a meeting penciled in. I’d like to run something by you. An idea for a new position. Something you two can do together.”

Liam frowned. “Does it involve me retiring from the Benson PD?”

Clare shrugged one shoulder. “Unlikely, but it’s possible if that’s what you want.”

He scratched his chin, his mind reeling. They didn’t even know if Roxie was alive, and Clare was making plans for the future. What was taking the surgery so long? Surely, they should know the outcome by now.

Gage clapped a hand on his shoulder. “It’ll keep until Roxie is ready to come with you to the meeting.”
