Simon nodded. “Exactly.”

Peter shook Liam’s hand. “They’re waiting for you in Clare’s office.”

So this was it.

She held his hand and managed to snag Bob for a hug around his paper plate of more frosting than cake. “Good to see you.”

“Mmm.” He lifted his brows.

What was that about? She didn’t have time to ask before Liam tugged her on.

The door to Clare’s office was open. And the receptionist’s desk was clear.

“Did you just fire your assistant?” They strode into the office, and Roxie spotted the two federal agents—and their K-9. “Hi, honey.” She crouched, and the dog came over to sniff her. Roxie rubbed her shoulders first, then all the way down her sides while the dog sniffed at her face. “Hello, gorgeous.”

The dark-haired female agent—Dakota—chuckled. “She has that effect on quality people.”

Liam shook both their hands, then turned to her and helped her get upright.

Once Roxie stood, she looked at Clare. “Did you fire Lena?”

“Yes.” Clare said nothing else.Okay, then.“These agents requested a meeting with the two of you.” She didn’t look entirely happy.

Kind of like Liam in the last few weeks, trying to figure out what position to take. He’d told her he enjoyed his job—the way it had been with SWAT. Roxie had been encouraging him that whatever he decided should be what he wanted and not feel like settling. But was that even right? Maybe he should just take what he could get and learn to be content.

Still, there was so much about her life now that felt like pure magic. The kind that meant God—and only He—could have brought her here.

Dakota stepped toward them while her husband and partner on the taskforce hung back, using hand signals to have his dog sit. “Liam. Roxie. You know I run the Northwest Counter-Terrorism Taskforce already. Well, we’re a unique team made up of agents and officers from different agencies and even a few civilians. What started as an exercise in cooperation between police and federal agencies has developed into a family. It’s unique work, and we go all over the northwest and into Alaska.”

Roxie looked at Liam, whose eyes had flared. He wanted to visit his brother.

Dakota said, “You’re welcome to come to Seattle. See the office we work out of and the kind of things we do. I have open slots, and the bottom line is that I’d like the two of you to fill them.” She glanced at Roxie. “You’re not a cop, but like I said, we have civilian positions. Liam, we would like to add a police sergeant to our team. Your department highly recommends you, although I was warned that I’d be stealing you from them and they might begrudge me thatforever.” She smiled.

Roxie reached over and squeezed Liam’s hand.

Dakota said, “It would be a reassignment for you, Sergeant O’Connell. But we’d be lucky to have you, by the sound of it.”

Roxie sniffed back tears. Clare did not look happy at the prospect. Because she didn’t want to lose them.

Clare waved a hand. “Ignore me. Hormones.”

Roxie’s brows rose. Her friend was pregnant? Liam glanced at her—likely since she’d squeezed his hand. She glanced at him and whispered, “Clare and Gage are having a baby.”

Dakota’s eyes widened.

Behind her, Josh flushed red and grinned. “What a happy coincidence. Us, too.”

Liam chuckled and tugged Roxie closer to his side. She grinned, leaning her head against his arm for a second. Then she looked up at him. “What do you say? Want to go pay a taskforce a visit about two open positions?”

She recognized that light in his eyes. He smiled at her and nodded, then looked at Dakota. “Yes, I’d like that. If Roxie is on board, then so am I.”

There was a whole lot of handshaking—a few tears from Clare, who was apparently convinced they would leave and never come back—and they made plans to visit the next week.

An hour later, they were at Liam’s, pulling into his garage. She was exhausted. “Your house?”

“I have to go to work in fifteen minutes.” He looked at his watch. “That took longer than I thought. There’s probably a big mess inside.”

“Why would there—” She pushed open the door, which hurt a lot, and heard a high, sharp barking noise over the cooling of the engine. “What is that?”
