But then again, I am proud of myself for doing that and not giving in to temptation. Besides, when Gabriel claims me, I’ll become a vampire… then we’ll have forever to give into our desires.

After getting dressed, I walk to the front door of my apartment, only to realize that I don’t know what that bounty hunter did to my fucking car.

“Fuck,” I grumble and pull out my cell phone, about to call a taxi, when I hear someone knocking on my front door. Xenia and I share a look and she removes her Beretta from her bag while I grab the dagger on the stand where I place my keys.

“Who is it?”

“My name is Daniel and I’m part of the DA’s security team, ma’am. He arranged for us to be your protection while he slumbers,” a youthful voice comes from the other side of the door and when I open it, I see a 20-something dressed in a suit. “Good morning, ma’am.”

“Gabriel sent you?”

“He arranged this last night, yes, and mentioned that you leave for work around this time. Are you ready to leave?”

I narrowed my eyes on him. “How do I know I can trust you?”

He offers me a small smile, then his eyes shimmer to a light brown. “I’m a werewolf, ma’am, not a hunter. The King informed us of the bounty hunters; rest assured, we won’t allow anything to happen to you.”

This makes me feel better since my father would never send a supernatural creature to do his dirty work. I turn around and nod at Xenia before grabbing my things and following Daniel out.

Woah. I can’t believe Gabriel went as far as setting up a security detail for me right after he left here last night. He must have really gone to work the second he left here, and the thought alone makes me smile.

It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that he feels the same way as me; getting that out into the open was just the first hurdle, though.

I get to work and see Noah laying with his head on the front counter, fast asleep. This worries me tremendously because he’s never been one to pass out at work.

“Noah,” I call, gently shaking his shoulder. “Hey, Noah. Wake up,”

Scaring the shit out of me, he jumps to his feet with his eyes wide and looks around before his gaze settles on me. “I’m up! I’m… God, I’m so sorry,” he says, lifting up his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose.

I frown as I look at him; the boy is exhausted, I can tell by the dark rings under his eyes. “Are you getting enough sleep, Noah?”

He turns around and walks to the coffee reserved for staff. “Yeah, why do you ask?”

Sighing, I place a hand on his shoulder. “If you need a day off, you’re more than welcome to take a few, you know that, right?”

“I’m fine, Kat, really. I’ve just been up late studying,” he says, offering me a reassuring smile. “Really, I’m good. But if I do need a day or two, I’ll let you know.”

I can’t help but pull him into a hug; it’s going to suck not seeing him grow more. “You do that and don’t burn yourself out, please. Nothing is worth a burnout, not even this job.” I say, and he gives me one of his dimpled smiles.

Throughout my shift, I feel excited and a bit sad knowing that I won’t be seeing Noah after today. I thought our goodbye would come in a month or two, not in a few hours after Gabriel fetches me tonight.

How am I going to do it? I’ve never had to say a permanent farewell to anyone before and the fact that I have to do it right now breaks my heart.

But even my goodbye gets taken away from me because after the lunch rush hits, I send Noah home for messing up customers’ drinks because of exhaustion. Hmm, maybe I can twist Gabriel’s arm and ask him to stay one more day.

At closing time, Daniel collects me along with three others and takes me home. God, how am I going to get used to all of this? I’m the most independent woman I know; well, apart from Xenia.

“Excited for tonight?” she asks me when she sees me standing in front of my closet.

“I’d be more excited if I had something decent to wear,” I grumble, tightening the towel around my body. “I didn’t exactly think about buying sexy clothes!”

“Oh, bullshit. Gabriel will tear off whatever you’re wearing, anyway. Just throw on what you usually would; fuck knows you’ll have forever to dress up for him,”

“You’re a fountain of knowledge,”

“I know, right? I should be a fucking guru,” she grins, leaning against the door. “What time is he coming, anyway?”

This is where I mentally kicked myself throughout the day because I never thought to get his number. All I know is that I’m seeing him tonight, and that’s it.
