"The guy," I mutter in disbelief.

"The guy from the office?" Her eyebrows shoot up in surprise.

I nod and, before I can react, I find myself slipping from my seat under the table. Leia reaches out to grab me, but I manage to evade her. I feel humiliated by my actions, but panic has a strange way of making you do irrational things.

Leia tries to coax me out, but I'm not having it. "I am afraid, though! So, so afraid of that beautiful man."

"Get a hold of yourself, Sutt."

I can't believe I'm doing this. It's not a good look for me, and I'd be mentally kicking myself if I weren't too humiliated to think straight.

Leia's laughter can be heard as she takes the lead, facing the four men who've approached our table. If only that made me feel better. Leia is not the most effective at "handling" things.

Beneath the table, I cower, not wanting to hear what they're saying. If I don't listen, I can pretend this never happened and avoid agonizing over it later.

I start to pray to the universe, but it's hard to focus with the rush of panic coursing through me and Leia's voice booming through the bar. I'd say, "Poor them," but I'm the one who deserves a pity party.

Universe, help me.

CHAPTERFOUR

LINCOLN

Entering Silver'sand waiting for our usual booth is a relief. It's tucked into the back corner, a spot where we can avoid most disturbances. This is the primary reason I tolerate this place – the guarantee of privacy.

As we wait, I scan the bar, inadvertently making eye contact with a girl from earlier. She's the one. I nudge Ronan, who, being Ronan, loudly exclaims, "Where?"

I elbow him roughly in the side before pointing out her location. But when I look back to her, she's vanished. It's frustrating; she's playing mind games with me.

Ronan searches the bar, bewildered. "Where, man?" He's struggling to identify who I'm talking about.

"If it wasn't so dim in here, I could spot her more easily," I mutter. "She was sitting across from the girl with the short dark hair. I'm going over to ask where her friend went."

Ronan, being the obnoxious friend he is, puffs out his chest and announces loudly, "I'm coming."

I try to stop him with a hand on his shoulder, but it's too late. He's already heading over. "Really, man?"

I slip in front of him to prevent him from saying something absurd and scaring the girl off. I need information.

Unfortunately, Ronan approaches the table and states, "Where did your friend go?" Classic Ronan.

The friend looks up, laughing. "What friend?" she says nonchalantly.

Ronan treats it as a challenge. "You know what, friend, you liar! Two liar friends who like to lie to me and my best buddy."

The friend continues to laugh, thoroughly amused. She composes herself and stands up, her demeanor turning icy as she jabs Ronan in the chest. "You need to mind your own damn business; you never know who you'll piss off." Ronan is stunned into silence.

It's clear that this girl doesn't recognize us or she wouldn't be talking this way. We're quite the big deal on campus, but she's unfazed. I don't know what her deal is, but it's intriguing.

Without acknowledging us, she reaches under the table, struggles for a moment, and pulls out the girl from earlier. I can't believe she was hiding under the table.

With a nasty glare and her timid friend at her side, the girl with short hair says, "She was allowed to be there. Just wait. You'll figure out why eventually."

I look at the timid girl and say, "Hey." Her face flushes as she smooths her dress down. It fits her body perfectly, and I'm momentarily distracted by the sight. She's gorgeous, but I manage to flick my eyes back to her face, embarrassed for being caught staring at her chest.

She tenses, trying to appear confident, but her body is visibly trembling. "Hi," she says in a soft, soothing voice that loosens the tightness in my stomach.

Before I can say more, her friend interjects, "Great to meet you guys, we will definitely be seeing you all later," and she winks before pulling her friend through the tables and out the front door.
