“Cute as a button,” Anna adds.

Syd smiles and they both hug her.

Connor watches me like he is seeing me for the first time.

“This is quite an apartment,” he notes. The sheer size of the place is something, but the way Nana decorated is out of this world. She updates the place every five years to stay on top of recent trends.

“Teddy is waiting for you,” Nora says to Syd.

We follow Nora to the living area, since that is where Nana spends most of her days. Today she is wearing a light-green suit pant set and she has her long hair twisted in an updo, with gold button earrings in her ears.

“Connor, I’d like you to meet my nana,” I say to him.

“Nana, this is Connor,” I introduce him.

Connor extends his hand to Nana. “That simply won’t do. You come down here and give me a hug and a kiss. My Ellie has never brought a man home to meet me. You must be special, and my name is Antonella Albizzi.”

Connor obliges, leaning in to give her a kiss.

“Ellie is the special one,” he counters. “And it’s a real pleasure to meet you.” He looks at me and gives me a panty-dropping smile. His blue eyes glow mischievously.

“Thank you,” I say with a blush because he did compliment me.

We take a seat in the wing chairs. Nana has rearranged this smaller seating area to accompany our visit and there are another two chairs for Connor and Syd.

“Hi there, Syd. Come give Nana a hug.”

Syd runs up to her and throws her arms around her neck and Nana laughs.

“Can I play with Teddy?” Syd asks excitedly.

“Sure, here, take him from my lap,” Nana says, lifting her hands. “You know where his toys are. He’s been dying to play catch all day.”

Syd grins wide and hisses, “This is the best day ever.”

We start off with small talk as Connor tells Nana a little about his goalie career and then about moving to New York with Syd. Nana asks about his parents, and he informs her they are gone. Nana then tells him how Nonno loved hockey so much they bought a hockey team.

“That’s incredible,” Connor says.

“Do you see yourself in management once your career will be over, or will you become a broadcaster?” Nana asks.

“Nana, Connor is only twenty-five,” I say.

“So what?” She smiles, watching me.

“I would love to get involved with management but as you can imagine, it isn’t easy,” he says.

“I know,” she agrees with a tilt of her head.

I’ve had my non-ring hand covering my ring hand all this time and I am getting antsy. I’m kind of lying to Nana, which is something I’ve never done before, even if it is for a good cause.

“Nana, we have some news,” I say, and I am literally shaking from the inside out.

Connor takes hold of my hand in his large hand, his skin is calloused and warm, and yet, I feel sparks erupt inside me from his touch. “We have some news.”

“We’re getting married,” I splutter, his hand gives mine a squeeze, maybe signaling me to get a grip.

“What?” Nana asks and her lower lip quivers as she looks between Connor and me.
