“This is right, Nana, I never felt this way before,” I tell her, trying to keep my lies to a minimum. “Connor and Syd have brought so much to my life.”

“Ellie has been the best thing that’s happened to me and Syd,” Connor says. “I know it hasn’t been very long, but when you know it’s right, you know.”

Wow! I look at Connor and think I could kiss him right now.

He turns his head and says, “I even know what she’s thinking. Do you want to kiss me right now, beautiful?”

I gasp, “How can you know?”

“It’s the way you’re looking at him,” Nana confirms.

Instead of me kissing him, Connor leans over and presses his lips to mine and he holds the kiss for a moment.

“Well, congratulations to you both. I probably don’t need to ask what Syd thinks. I’m guessing she is over-the-moon excited,” Nana concludes.

“She is,” Connor agrees thoughtfully. “Those two bonded, right off the bat. It’s what made me realize how special Ellie truly is.”

My heart gallops at his sweet words because they don’t feel scripted at all. They feel like they are spoken from the heart.

“My granddaughter is special. You must be special too if she’s chosen you,” Nana says to Connor. He smiles and then turns to look at me, a thoughtful smile spreading his lips. “Have you two lovebirds set a date?”

Connor looks to me. “We haven’t but I want to make sure, I mean, we want to have a short engagement,” I stutter. “It’s important for me that you’ll be there.”

“Are you inviting your parents and brothers?” Nana asks.

“What would be the point? We haven’t spoken in years. They so easily wrote me off,” I say, even though it hurts my heart that my family wasn’t more loving. More caring. If it didn’t have to do with the bottom line then it wasn’t important.

Nana nods.

“I want to take care of the wedding. It will be my wedding present,” she says.

“I appreciate that, ma’am, but I would like to take care of the wedding,” Connor interjects.

“Son, she is my favorite granddaughter. Give a dying woman her last wish.”

My heart stutters as I think of a time she won’t be in my life, and I can’t imagine it. Who will I have deep conversations with? Who will know my truth?

“Yes, ma’am,” Connor concedes.

“What do you think of having the venue at my house in the Hamptons?” Nana asks.

“Nana, won’t it be too hard for you to travel?” I ask.

“Sorry to interrupt,” Nora says, taking a step toward us. I hadn’t noticed her approach. “What about right here?”

“At the apartment?” Nana asks her then she looks to me, I’m guessing for approval.

I look to Connor. “Every good childhood memory I’ve had has been here.”

“How can I say no to that?” Connor’s smile is wide, flashing pretty good teeth for a hockey player. I’m thinking it’s because he’s a goalie and has to wear all that gear.

Syd walks up to us holding Teddy. “Look, Daddy, I can hold him by myself, and he likes it.” Teddy licks her cheek.

“I can see that, Sweet Pea.”

“So is it set, then?” Nana asks.

“Yes,” I cheer. “We just need to choose a date.”
