“It’s true,” she says.

“I can see it too,” I admit, which isn’t a lie. I want to have Connor Donaldson’s babies.

“They’d be really pretty too,” Nana adds.

“He is easy on the eyes,” I agree.

“Tell Nora I’ll set the date with Connor and be in touch.”

Nana breaks into a coughing fit. It makes me realize that maybe time is running out.

We end the call and I have a heavy feeling sitting on my chest.

I spend the next few hours sketching the painting. I figure I can always take a lot of pictures with my phone and try to finish it based on memory when we are back at home. I know I will keep this place close to my heart.

Connor and Syd finally walk through the door. They are exhausted and still wet when they return. Connor sends Syd to shower and while he goes to shower, I prepare some pasta with the groceries he brought from home.

We eat dinner together. Syd doesn’t stop telling me about the amazing water park and the slides she and Connor went on together. After dinner, she asks to go to her room and rest and when he goes to check on her, she is out like a light.

I am cleaning dinner off the table when he comes back downstairs. His hair is slicked back and still a little wet from his shower. He’s wearing a plain white T-shirt and simple gray shorts, and yet he looks like a model.

“You were quiet at dinner,” he notes, coming up behind me.

“Was I?”

“What’s going on?” he asks.

I sigh. “I spoke with Nana. I think her condition is worsening.”

“I’m sorry, Ellie. I know what it’s like to lose the most important person in your life. I lost both my parents in the span of a year.”

“I’m so sorry.”

He exhales. “Syd got me through it.”

I nod.

“Do you think we can have the wedding soon?” I ask.

“Yeah, when were you thinking? I think it would be good for my case with Sybil.”

“Next week.” I wince.

His blue eyes bulge and go back down to size. “We could make that work. I mean, it would be before Skylar and Liam’s wedding but I don’t see a problem. Does your nana’s staff think they could make it work?”

I nod. “I think they can.”

He pulls out his phone. “Just calculating when the guys will have a free night. I have a feeling they are going to be in the Stanley Cup Finals.”

I take a breath. “It must be hard for you.”

“It is. I mean it would’ve been great to have the championship title, but fate took me on a different path.” He watches me holding the gaze.

It brought me to you.

“Fate can be weird like that,” I say.

He checks his phone. “Would next Thursday work?”
