I swallow. This. Is. Happening.

“Yes.”

“Okay, then it’s set,” he says. “Should we send out invitations? You know to make it formal.”

“I can take care of an e-vite if you can send me all your friends’ emails,” I say, and my heart picks up pace, only I’m not panicking. I’m excited.

“Will do,” he says.

“Okay then, I’m kind of exhausted. I’ll go take a shower.”

He clears his throat and his gaze briefly lands on my chest. “It was a fun day. Hope you enjoyed it here.”

“It’s the best gift anyone has ever given me,” I say, feeling a little choked up. I lean over and hug him. It takes a moment for his arms to wrap around me.

“It’s hard to touch you like this. I don’t want to let go when I do,” he whispers against my ear, his warm breath causing goosebumps to erupt over my skin.

I look into his eyes. I’m covered in paint. I’m sweaty from our morning hike and bike ride. My hair is a frizzy mess and he still wants me.

Without thinking, I crash my lips to his. He kisses me back with just as much passion, and then he is lifting me in the air and I am wrapping my legs around his waist. His cock pulses between my thighs and I am so hungry and so wet for him I can’t think straight. My hands tangle in his hair and his hand dips into my shorts, rubbing my clit, but nothing feels like it’s enough as I rub his back and pull him closer to me.

“You’re so wet. So . . .”

“Daddy?” Syd’s voice pulls us from our sex-induced haze.

Connor freezes. I unlock my legs from his waist and then take a step back, and I am just happy we have our clothes on.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?” He turns to Syd, his breaths coming fast. He adjusts his cock in his shorts.

“I need to pee,” she says. I realize that since she crashed so quickly, we didn’t have our regular bedtime routine of going to the bathroom first.

“Okay, come on,” he sighs and guides her.

“Daddy, are you and Ellie going to make me a baby sister?” she asks him.

I’m dead. I smack a hand across my mouth. Shit.

“Not yet,” he says to her.

“Okay, because for my seventh birthday I am wishing for a baby sister,” she announces.

Connor doesn’t answer… and me? I run for the shower feeling giddy and slightly off-kilter.

When I get into bed, I toss and turn but I don’t go to him. We may be getting married, but I don’t know that his opinion of us has changed. Even after we’ve bonded the way we have.

He sends me an email with a list of his buddies’ email addresses and I set up the e-vite. I prepare the invitation. It’s off-white with gold accents. It’s really what I would choose if I was, in fact, getting married next week.

I press send and hold my breath. There is only one way for this to end.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

Ellie

“I don’t want to go to school,” Syd protests. “I like vacation time better.”

“Syd, you can’t miss the bus. I need to go see Nana and Nora today to make arrangements for the wedding. Daddy and I are getting married next week, and I need you to help me out here.” This isn’t her first tantrum, but she doesn’t have many so when they do hit, I get flustered.

She blows out a breath and rolls her eyes. Her sassiness is sometimes too funny. “Fine, but just because you’re marrying Daddy. I want you to promise me a baby sister.” She holds her forefinger up at me. To think this kid didn’t speak to me when we first met. We sure have come a long way.
