Hurricane glances up, and everyone nods. “All right… appreciate your candor. If you need our help, we’re here.”

“Thanks, Hurricane. I may just take you up on that at some point. Good luck with Selene.”

“I have a feelin’ you’re gonna need some luck too, brother,” Hurricane replies.

Cain huffs. “Like you wouldn’t believe…” he replies, then ends the call.

Hurricane leans back in his chair as silence filters through the room.

No one is saying anything about the bomb that was just dropped on us.

So I decide to speak first, “We need to get Raid to figure out where Selene and her minions hang out. A local haunt, somewhere we can go to corner them and grab her?”

Everyone turns, and Hoodoo frowns at me. “We? You thinkyou’regoing on this little excursion? Have youseenthe state you’re in?” He looks me up and down.

Flaring my nostrils, I glare at him. “You thinkfor a damn secondthat I am going to miss out on you guys taking that fucking bitch down? No. Not happening. Never. Either I go with you, or this isn’t happening at all.”

Hoodoo folds his arms over his chest. “Then I guess this isn’t happen—”

“Hoodoo, what the fuck? You can’t treat me like some chi—”

“I’m not treating you like a child, Maxxy. I had to resuscitate you, for fuck’s sake!”

“But I’m fin—”

“You’re not fine. You’re still recovering. You’renotgoing!”

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“You fucking watch me.”

I let out a grunt. “You’re an assho—”

“And you’re a stubborn bitc—”

“Okay, okay, stop your damn bickerin’. You two are like an old married couple. Hoodoo, I understand you wanna protect Maxxy, but she needs to see this through. She comes, she stands back, and I’ll have men protecting her, but she comes. End of discu—”

“Pres—”

“End. Of. Discussion, Hoodoo,” Hurricane fires back at him.

I smile so fucking wide as I dip my chin at Hurricane. “Thanks, Pres. Appreciate this.”

“As for you, miss mouthy, you step a foot outta line while we’re there, you put yourself or anyone else in danger, therewillbe consequences. Your job is to stay safe and watch while we do the work. Can you do that, Maxxy?” Hurricane asks.

“Yes, sir,” I reply, sinking in on myself a little.

“Good… now, Raid, I need you to figure out where we can ambush this fuckin’ bitch. I need a solid plan. No fuckin’ mistakes. I want this flawless. I don’t want anyone else hurt.”

“Got it! I’ll figure it out, Pres,” Raid replies.

“In the meantime, everyone gets some rest. We got a big fight comin’, and I need all of you on your A-game.” Everyone nods, and Hurricane bangs his gavel. “Once Raid has a plan, we’ll set it in motion. Nowget the fuck out.”

We all chuckle and stand. Hoodoo wraps his arm around me as we go to walk out. I glance up at him, and we make our way out together. Then he pulls me to the side once everyone has moved past us. “I don’t like the idea of you coming with us, considering all your injuries, Maxxy. I know you can take care of your shit normally, but you’re down for the count right now, and honestly, baby… I can’t go through the thought of losing you again. Seeing you like th-that…” His voice cracks on the last word, and as my heart skips a beat, my good hand comes up, caressing his face, making him look at me.

“I’m okay because ofyou. You didn’t give up on me. But Iamgoing to be okay out there because I have all of you at my back, taking care of me. Ihaveto see this through, Hoodoo.Ihaveto.I can’t sit by and not be there when Selene is taken out. It doesn’t feel right. I want my damn pound of flesh.”

He scowls but leans into my palm. “I don’t like it.”
