Colt opened his mouth to respond when there was a loud commotion. An overpowering bang rang through the huge room, the acoustics of the empty space making it echo back on them.

Relief poured through Alisha’s system as officers dressed in black uniforms and SWAT vests swarmed into the warehouse.

Rueben hadn’t just called in backup; he’d called in the big guns.

A huge confusion ensued. Men shouted warnings as guns were trained on all of them. Colt’s eyes first grew large with fear and then drew into small slits as he trained his gaze back on Alisha.

“You did this,” he sneered, his tone laced with hatred and rage. Alisha’s heart leaped out of her chest as he aimed his gun directly at the figure behind her.

“No!” she shouted as she jumped up, her mind running through all the training she’d received over the years. He hadn’t been expecting her quick response, nor had he thought to pat her down when she entered. His face fell into a comically surprised mask as Alisha knocked his feet from under him and then pounced on him to hold her knife at his throat.

“You’re done, asshole,” she spat at him.

It took all of Alisha’s willpower to not push down on the knife. It would be so easy to get rid of him, but before the fleeting thought could take root, a large familiar frame kneeled down next to her.

“You can let him go now, sweet girl. Daddy’s here.” His soft, soothing voice was exactly what her body needed to let go of the coiled tension. She jumped up and took a step away from Colt, not bothering to give the man any more of her attention. Other than a firm kick in the nuts, she let another officer take over and detain him.

Now that the threat had been handled, she could focus back on her Addy. Grabbing Rueben’s hand, she rushed back to their other soul mate, where paramedics were already working on him.

Rueben wrapped his arms around her as they watched the experts do their job, but nothing had ever been as hard as staying out of the way.

Once Adam was stabilized, they loaded him onto a stretcher before rushing him to an ambulance. Rueben helped her get into their cruiser before they followed their heart to the closest trauma center.

Chapter 32

Adam couldn’t tell if he was dead or not. The pounding in his head said no, but the sweet, welcoming scent of Alisha and the feel of a large rough hand holding his had to mean he was in heaven.

His thoughts were jumbled, his memories disjointed and fragmented enough that he couldn’t put them together with the pounding in his skull working as an effective distraction.

An insistent beep filled his ears, annoying him enough to want to open his eyes so he could ask them to turn it off, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t get his eyelids to obey. The sound of quiet sobbing was barely discernible underneath the loud obnoxious beep-beep-beep.

He wanted to comfort his girl, but his limbs were too heavy to lift and the darkness that had been holding him captive for what felt like forever was slowly pulling him down again.

His last thought before it claimed him was that he’d never gotten a chance to tell them he loved them.

“He’ll wake up soon, sweetness. The doctors explained that his body had been through a huge trauma, and it just needs some time to heal.”

Adam was woken up by the sound of his Daddy’s voice. His entire body was one huge, achy mess, and he couldn’t quite tell if there was any part of him that hadn’t been injured.

His eyes still refused to open, and no matter how hard he tried to lift an arm, a hand or even a finger, nothing happened.

“I know, Daddy,” Alisha responded to Rueben’s words. “But I can’t help but worry he won’t want us anymore when he does eventually wake up.”

“Hush now, none of that. He cares for us. Adam is one of the sweetest, most understanding men I know. There is no way he’ll blame you for what happened, Ali.”

Adam wanted nothing more than to confirm his Daddy’s words, but the darkness was dragging him back into its depths.

The last thing he heard before he succumbed was the rustling of clothes before the sound of muffled sobbing.

“The naughty littlegirl tried to hide the evidence of her misdeeds, but alas, it was to no avail because before she could wipe away all of the cookie crumbs, her Daddy’s shadow loomed over her.”

Alisha’s sweet voice read from one of her favorite books. She’d read the story to him previously, and afterward, they’d had the most amazing time torturing their Daddy with all the tips they’d learned in the smutty romance novel.

Adam wasn’t sure how long he’d been stuck in this purgatory, but he’d lost count of the number of times he’d woken to Alisha and Rueben’s voices.

He did know that his body had stopped hurting so much, and breathing didn’t cause an endless amount of fire to race through his chest, so if he had to guess, he had spent quite some time in the hospital bed.

The sound of a door opening and closing alerted Adam to a new presence in the room.
