“Is that a good plan?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean… It’s… She’s not…” I swallowed. “You’re giving her—”

“Hope?” Rook asked. “Isn’t that what we’resupposedto be doing?”

“Yeh, but this isn’t… it’s not fair—”

“She’s done this more than I have. She’ll tell me if it’s too much.”

“Done what?” I asked.

“I don’t know… got through bad stuff. And anyway, manifest what you want, right?”

“Where did you get that? A self help site?”

Rook scowled, punching me in the arm. “My gran actually. And it’s how I got through the academy.” His grin was playful. “I get that you think I’m an idiot, but I’m still a world class actor. I didn’t get that from nothing.”

When she returned from the bathroom, I watched them more intently. Rook was cutting out pictures from a magazine while Vex found places to put each piece on the board.

They were building a future.

My heart twisted.

A future she might never have.

I shoved that thought away. Rook was right about one thing: if Vex wasn’t letting that hold her back, I had no right to either.

Plus, Rook had found five different versions of himself from magazines and pinned them each onto the Nepalese sights along with the monkeys Vex was cutting out.

Rook wasn’t just building her a future. He was building a futurewithoutme.

I ripped the magazine from his hand (the front page had a huge photo of a topless Rook with the title: ‘Harrison Takes the Crown for his Princess’) and began furiously sifting through it for photos of the rest of us.

“I did some research on omegas and travel,” Rook was saying. “We can‘pocket size’your nest and most of the time that’s still comfortable, but we need to get the foundation down first if we’re going to do that.”

“Pocket nest?” Vex was grinning. “Let’s make a collage for that too…” She trailed off, eyes darting around the board that was stuffed full. Well, itwouldn’tbe with a little less Rook.

“Ah…” Rook scratched his head—though I recognised the move as one of his acting quirks. I narrowed my eyes. “This one isn’t big enough,” he said. “Especially not with all of Drake’s plans for your nest—”

“What?”Vex asked, spinning to me.

I stared at her, chewing on my lip. “I…” I swallowed, unable to take my eyes away from her at that moment. “I just… had some ideas.”

“Can I hear them?” she asked, her golden eyes wide.

“I mean…” I palmed the back of my neck, refusing to look at Rook. “You couldseethem if you want?”

Her mouth dropped open in surprise. “Youdrewthem?”

“Well, I made a poster board like this. They’re nothing crazy. Just—”

“Drake’snestideas?” She was getting to her feet, dragging me up with her. “I want them,” she demanded, and fuck if her scent didn’t just hit the room like a raspberry baking bomb.

Pretty golden eyes were fixed on me from amongst fluttering eyelashes and soft freckles on pink cheeks.

I opened my mouth, ready to tell her I’d get her whatever she wanted, only I’d forgotten exactly what it was.
