He looks faintly bewildered, and it goes straight to my heart.

Of course he’s bewildered. He knows something is off, but he can’t figure out what it is.

Shaking off the soft emotions, I manage to keep my tone light. “You’re staring at me.”

“And?”

“And it’s disturbing my slumbers.”

“You weren’t asleep.”

“I was working on it. And I could feel your eyes boring into me.”

“That sounds painful.”

“It was. How would you like to have eyes boring into you at five thirty in the morning?”

He chuckles. “I woke up to you staring at me.”

“I wasn’t staring!”

“Weren’t you?”

“No. I just haven’t…” I catch myself before saying I haven’t really seen him sleep before because I have no way of knowing if that’s true of Amber. “I’m just used to you getting up at the crack of dawn.”

“Yeah.” He lets out a long, thick sigh. Almost a groan.

The textured exhale does dangerous things to my insides.

“I guess I am kind of tired,” he admits, closing his eyes.

His eyelashes aren’t unusually long, but they’re thick and dark and look striking against the shadowed skin under his eyes.

“Of course you’re tired. No one can work as much as you and not be tired. Why don’t you take the weekend off?”

“I can’t. I’ve got a conference call at eleven this morning.”

I sneer. What the hell kind of ridiculous people set up a business call on a Saturday? “Okay. Fine. Then take tomorrow off. Surely you don’t have anything on your schedule for a Sunday.”

“No. I don’t.”

“Okay then. It’s settled. You’re taking tomorrow off.”

His shoulders shake a few times in silent laughter. “Shouldn’t I have a say in settling such a thing?”

“No. Not really. You’ve shown yourself to be completely incompetent at managing a reasonable work schedule, so I’m having to make an executive decision.” I pause. It feels like he’s responding well to my teasing bossiness, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to agree. So my voice is softer, more hesitant, as I add, “So will you take tomorrow off?”

“I guess I have to if you’ve made an executive decision about it.” He’s smiling, fond and still amused.

I gulp at the look.

It’s Amber’s expression.

It’s not mine.

He must see something on my face because his smile fades. “What’s the matter?”

“Nothing.” I beam at him to prove it.
