I don’t see anyone who looks remotely like a threat, but Caleb is the professional here, so we get up to walk back to our building.

Caleb has relaxed by the time we enter the lobby. He tells us it’s all fine. No one followed us.

He comes up to our apartment and walks through every room before he lets us in. He always does that, even though the only access to it is a private elevator that has a twenty-four-hour guard. He gives me a twitch of a smile before he leaves us alone.

I smile at his strong back and broad shoulders as he exits. “I like him,” I say casually.

“I like him too. He’s good.” William glances at my face and the front door where Caleb just disappeared. “Just don’t like him too much.”

I giggle at this and give him a soft hug. “No chance.”

“Good to know.” He hugs me back before he releases me. “He is a good guy though. He’s worked for our family for a long time.”

“Really? I never noticed him.”

“He wasn’t assigned to me. He was actually assigned to Louisa at first.”

“Louisa, your cousin?”

“Yeah. She was really wild when she was younger, and her dad was paranoid.” He huffs with amusement. “She ran the poor guy ragged for a couple of years. When she went into rehab, he got transferred to handle general security for Arthur. And then when we needed the best to protect you from Montaigne, he came over here.”

“Oh interesting.” I lean over to take off my shoes and leave them in the entryway. “When am I going to meet Louisa?”

“She keeps to herself now most of the time, but I can give her a call and see if we can visit for a weekend or something. She’s up in a small town in Maine. She’ll definitely come for the wedding.”

“I’d love to visit if she’s up to it. I love hanging out with Arthur and Scarlett, but it feels like I don’t really know the rest of your family.”

“They’re pretty well scattered, but I’ll work on it.”

“Thank you. If they don’t want it, it’s fine. You don’t have to push. But I’d love to get to know them if they’re willing. I don’t have any family except Amber,” I explain, easing closer to him with my hands on his shirt.

“That’s not true,” he says, his brown eyes very sober. “You have me now. I’m your family.”

I swallow hard, touched and melting with feeling. “Yeah.”

“And maybe one day we can grow our family.” His eyebrows lift in a gentle question. “Have some kids?”

I nod urgently, momentarily unable to speak. “I want that too.”

His face breaks briefly before he pulls me into another hug. “All right then. When we’re ready, sweetheart, we can make that happen.”
