Brody sighs. “And I mentioned you’d have to talk to Sandra about it,” he says pointedly.

I shake my head, vigorously.

“No, I have to talk about it withyou!” I say. “How do you want to be seen with me, Brody? What are we?”

Suddenly agitated, he taps his foot and looks down, from side to side. I can see him chewing on the sides of his mouth, as if swallowing the words he really wants to say.

Whatever he really wanted. to say, I’ll never know, because what came out was, “Why was everybody informed that you’re pregnant but me?”

I would be shocked, except I’m not. His ex-wife must have been the one to share the news with him. But I am livid, and I sigh deeply to catch my breath and lighten up my soul.

“Brody, I’m not sure yet,” I tell him as a consolation prize.

“But if you are…” he releases his arms from the cross they were and gesticulates. “Is the child mine?”

I avert my gaze, take another deep breath and say “I’ve been having you and your employees at my house every night since my period is late. And I only had sex with one of them.”

Brody looks down, seemingly ashamed of what we’ve done. I on the other hand, am proud of us and only want to be with him.

“What are we, Brody?” I continue, insistent.

I take both his hands into mine and look deep into his green eyes. An instant later he embraces me tightly and tilts me back and kisses me with all his might, almost sweeping me off my feet because I can barely feel the floor under me as he does.

I’m overjoyed by his reaction. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I caress whatever exposed skin he has, feeling his breath and his heartbeat against mine, happy tears springing to my eyes.

I’m back on my feet, but he doesn’t let go of the kiss, only deepening it, leaving only small breaches to gasp for air.

I’m lightheaded, standing only because Brody is supporting me. I can feel his hips press against mine, and the hardening bulge he’s hiding under his slacks.

That’s when we both hear a “Ca-ham!” and I freeze in place.

“Are you done?” Sandra says, arms crossed and leaning against the pole, much more aggressively than Brody.

“Sandra, I can explain,” Brody says, letting me go so suddenly I almost fall.

“There’s nothing to explain, Brody,” she says, surprisingly calm. “We’re all adults here, aren’t we?”

“We didn’t mean to hurt you, Sandra…” I plead quietly.

“But you did!” she says, matter-of-factly. “I thought we were friends enough for you to trust me with something big like this!”

Brody moves his mouth, but nothing comes out. I, on the other hand, have no trouble speaking. “And I thought we were friends enough for you not to rattle your mouth to Brody’s ex-wife.”

I can hear Sandra seething. “Alright, I made a mistake!” she slams a foot on the ground. “And by the way…”

She walks to us, but passes right by us, heading for the microphone in front of me. With some interference, it’s shut down.

“The microphone was live. The whole stadium knows your news, now. Luckily, I won’t say anything about this so hopefully this won’t jeopardize the contract.”

Brody and I look at each other, speechless.

“Thank you, Sandra,” Brody says, defeated.

“I just can’t believe you both kept this from me,” Sandra says, her eyes dark.

“We didn’t tell you because we were afraid of what you would think,” I say in our defense.

“No, the fault is mine,” Brody says, taking a step forward as if shielding me from Sandra. “I was the one scared of what you would think. Ana loves herself some gossip. She tells me about what you two talk about. I know you wanted me back with her. And you’ve never liked anyone else I’ve dated. You were horrible about anyone else.”
