My chest tightens and it gets harder to breathe. I run into my room and use my nebulizer before my breathing gets worse. I get lots of asthma attacks when mom leaves me alone. I just get so scared that I don’t know what to do.

That night she came home. When she spotted me on the couch, she walked up to me and slapped me in the face. “Why are you not sleeping?!” She shouts.

My eyes widen as I hold my cheek. “I-I-I couldn’t sleep because I was scared.” I stutter as tears pour from my eyes.

“You’re a fucking liar! You just want to skip school! Go to bed right now! You want your stupid school to call. You want to make me look like a bad mom, don't you?!” She continues. “I know you hate me! I don’t care because I hate you too! You ungrateful brat!”

I run to my room and cry quietly. If she heard me crying, I would be in bigger trouble. I dream of a time when dad was still here. He was always nice to me, and mom was nicer when he was here. I’m not sure why she hates me now…

Chapter 8

Taurus

When I wake up, I am in complete darkness. What time is it? Then I feel a strange movement, I sit up in my seat and realize I am not in the guest house, I’m in a car. Ru is working on a laptop and smiles when he sees me.

“Morning. Sorry, but we had to leave earlier than expected so I just carried you to the car. I'm surprised you never woke up; you are a dangerously deep sleeper. We’re on our way to the jet.” Ru clarifies.

“Years of practice.” I pause, “I’m sorry, jet?”

He nods.

“You have a jet?”

“I am the CEO of one of the biggest fashion brands in the world, Ru Wén.” He introduces himself.

I roll my eyes playfully. “Ok, smartass.”

He chuckles.

Once we arrive to the jet, and get settled, the flight attendant tells me about my options for breakfast. Keeping my belly full was an effective way to get through the ride. I have been on planes before, but I am still not a fan of anything that leaves the ground.

I shove breakfast pastries in my mouth as Ru sits across from me typing on his laptop.

He abruptly stops typing and peeks at me licking the sugar from my finger. He leans forward, then licks and sucks on my finger until the sugar is gone. All the while, I’m crossing my legs, pretending I’m not turned on right now.

“What are you doing? I thought you wanted to keep this private until we figure out…our situation.” I whisper.

Ru smirks shutting his laptop. “Do tell. Whatisoursituation?”

I glare at his smug question, “Everything is just so new and up in the air. If it doesn’t work out, I don’t want to be known as the girl who fucked the CEO and got her way instead of working for it.”

Ru narrows his eyes at me sternly as if he were offended. “Taurus, I didn’t hire you because I care for you. Every designer who works for my company is talented. That’s how the company ran for solong. My feelings for you did not dictate your job. I don’t care how much respect I have for someone, if their work is shit, they can’t work in my company. Simple as that.” He clarifies. “I hired you because I recognize that you have promise.”

I nod.

Of course, he wouldn't have hired me because of that. I hope he’s not angry with me.

“I’m sorry.” I apologize.

“It’s okay. Dinners on you tonight.” Ru grins, as he caresses my cheek. Reassuring me that he is not upset.

I take a sip of my orange juice and then say, “I’ll start looking at restaurants.”

Once we landed, we met up with Bryn at the hotel.

“It's still early, but they should be awake.” Bryn smiles. “Good luck. Remember to not let Skylar out of your sight. Skylar is the blonde.”

“Got it.” I got this! Taking care of a kid shouldn’t be that hard, right?
