“Ms. Young, where are we?” I ask.

Ms. Young pinches my cheek, and I realize that’s where Ru gets it from. “Please don’t call me that. I’m your mother now, call me Yi or mom. I’m leaning towards ‘mom,’but we can work our way there.” She giggles.

“Got it.” I smile.

She turns her attention to the dresses in front of us, “These are custom wedding dresses you can look through these and see what you like. There are ten dresses here, if you don’t like them, we can move on.

As I look through the dresses, they are all so well designed. The intricate styles for the individual dresses have been done with so much care. “Whoever designs these, truly loves their work,” I say in awe.

“They do.” She replies.

As I look through the dresses, one stands out. A strapless dress with lace sleeves. On the sleeves are small white butterflies. “This is the one.” I grab the dress and change.

“How do you feel?” Ms. Young asks.

I try to hold in my tears because with these white butterflies, I can have my father with me at my wedding.

Ms. Young comes up and hugs me tightly. “Ru designed these dresses for you, he said you would choose this one.”

My eyes widen. Ru designed these wedding dresses for me. That’s why they were beautifully detailed. “Your son is beyond words.” I tear up.

When we get home. Ms. Young takes the dress with her as she leaves. Ru has been wanting to know every detail of our wedding, even what the dress looks like which is not going to happen.

“Taurus!” I hear him call out for me. “Are you home?”

He walks down the staircase and pulls me into an embrace. “Did you pick out your dress?” He asks.

“I did and you will never see it till the wedding day, so get it out of your head, groomzilla.” I tease.

He narrows his eyes at me. “My mother has it doesn’t she? That’s why she left so quickly.”

I shrug my shoulders. I am not going to answer him.

“I will behave. I won’t try and find the dress. Seeing you on our wedding day will be much more meaningful when I see it on you for the first time.” He asserts.

Now it’s my turn to narrow my eyes, “I don’t trust you, but fine.”

He bursts out in laughter, “I promise, Taurus”

Wedding Day

Yi stands beside me as I finish getting into my dress. She looks like such a proud mother, and it warms my heart. I don’t have a mother or father to be here with me, so her presence is much needed.

“You look breathtaking, sweetie.” Her eyes are red, she has been crying all morning.

She is such a refreshing vision of parental support and love.

Yi grabs my hand. “Are you ready?”

“No,” I say gripping her hand.

She puts her other hand on top of mine. “What do you fear, sweetie?”

I take a breath, “What if it’s all too good to be true?”

Yi rubs my hand with her thumb and looks into my eyes, “Do you know what I realized about life? That even when you are shown nothing but horrible interactions with people, it doesn’t mean that every interaction is going to be horrible after that.My parents were horrible to me growing up and so I thought that if they couldn’t love me, no one else would. Then, I met Michael, and because I was willing to put my trust in him, I got to experience true love for the first time. Does that mean it happens to everyone? No, but that doesn’t mean that you stop believing that you are worthy of love and happiness because everyone else tried to take it from you.”

I take in a breath. “I don’t need to tell you how much my son loves you. Anyone can see it clear as day. It’s your choice whether you want to allow him to continue loving you. That’s the risk you take.” She then hands me my father's letters that were on the table. “Read this one.” She insists.
