“I’m trying to be nice to you. You are stubborn, husband,” I whisper so his mother doesn’t overhear.

He scoffs, “You think forcing me into the house of my mother, who refused to speak to me for years, is nice? You are one hell of a gift giver.” I notice he is keeping his voice down.

His mother blurts something in Russian at him and he says something back. The way he said it sounds angry, but I could just be super ignorant.

I look at Izzy to see if she picked anything up of what they might say. “This must be howgringuitosfeel when we speak Spanish.” She whispers.

“What do you think they’re talking about?” In a hushed tone, I responded with a whisper.

“I’m sure they are having a sweet bonding moment.” A hopeful smile appears on my face.

Kyro

“It’s so strange, you’re a full adult. You’re so big now. You were such a skinny teenager.” My mother says in Russian.

“Don’t reminisce as if we were happy,” I reply in Russian. “We didn’t have much in Russia, but I never wanted more than what you could offer me. Even if it meant it could only be love. My whole life I never asked for a single thing and when I asked you to be free with me from the hell you had chosen for us, you disowned me.” I try to control my temperament as I speak to her. I have grown quite the temper ever since I have been on my own. I didn’t care to control it until I became thePakhan, and even more so with a wife and son.

“You know how I feel about Bratva men. You know what kind of people they are, of what they are capable of.” She huffs.

She will never accept me, and I have made my peace with it. I don’t want anyone who doesn’t want me. I won’t beg for acceptance from anyone. I look over at Reyna. Although she had good intentions, we cannot remedy this problem by a mere conversation.

“Let’s go,” I say, taking Reyna’s hand.

As I spoke, I turned to my mother, who was listening intently. “I won’t interrupt your life again.” I express myself in Russian.

She looks at me with those tear-soaked eyes, but she doesn’t say a word. I didn’t expect a fight because she didn’t fight for me then. Why would she fight for me now?

I escorted Izzy and Reyna out of my mother’s apartment. When we make it to the car, Nikolai is leaning against it. “I need to speak with my wife. Take Izzy to Miami,” I order.

Reyna and Izzy say their goodbyes. I open the car door and my wife steps into it. Reyna crosses her legs, and her hands are intertwined on top of her knee. She looks over at me with concerned eyes, but I just smile and touch her cheek. “I shouldn’t have gone behind your back. It won’t happen again. I just wanted—”

“Thank you, Reyna.” I cut her off. “But I won’t chase her. It’s not my job to make amends, and neither is it yours.”

Reyna gets closer to me and puts a hand on the side of my head. At this moment, I waited for her to soothe me with her lips, but instead, she leaned her forehead against my own. My dearest wife, how are you able to calm me with the slightest touch? How do those dark eyes of yours warm me with one glance?

Reyna’s faint breath brushes against my cheek as she falls asleep. “Causing such a stir and then falling asleep. Life will never be boring with you.” I chuckled.

Later That Week

Nikolai adjusts my tie, making sure it is perfectly straight. My mind goes to Ivan in these moments. As I prepare to wed his wife in a formal ceremony, it fills my mind with mixed emotions.

In walks Izzy. I narrow my eyes at her in confusion. “I’m sorry, Kyro, but your wife is my hostage for now.” She giggles.

The Ransom.

Back home when two people wed, the bride’s parents hide her from the groom, and he must do silly requests made by someone on the bridal side to get the bride back, if I don’t succeed, I will have to pay to get her back.

“What’s your price?” I playfully scoff.

Izzy grins. “I have only one task for you. If you can solve them, I will let you see your beautiful bride again.”

Inhaling deeply, I feel the coolness of the air as it enters my lungs. “What do you want me to do?”

Nikolai laughs as Izzy clears her throat. “I have hidden something in this room that is valuable to Reyna. You must find it. I will give you fifteen minutes. If you cannot find it, pay me a grand.”

Should I skip the trouble and just give her the money?
