I walk over and pull her into my arms. “What happened?” With a soft tone, I ask my seemly upset wife.

“Sheinsistedon speaking with you. That she could change your mind. She believes in some special bond you have. Then she went on about how you ignored her after she broke up with you.” She explains.

“There’s nothing there. You know that.” I squeeze tighter.

“I’m not worried, but what she said made me think about Ivan and you.” Her brows furrowed.

Why? “Us? Why?” I interrogate.

She unwraps my arms from her and crosses her arms. “Ivan and I were together for over ten years, and he lied to my face every day for all those years, but he says he loves me. Then you claim that she was your first love, but you couldn’t stop lying to her either, and it makes me think.” She pauses and I continue listening, “Then you didn’t speak to her after she reached out, so maybe you didn’t really love her and if that’s true, then maybe Ivan never really loved me either. Maybe all those years were a lie.”

Tears well up in those perfect brown eyes. My chest feels tight, as if it’s being stabbed. “My sweet wife, don’t cry.” I hush.

I held her in my arms and rubbed her back. “Trust me, he loved you so much. He loved you so much that he chose you over me. Knowing that I would cut him off completely. Knowing that he could die. He loved you so much that he risked his life just to stop lying to you.”

She gasps and whimpers, “I’m sorry. It’s probably hard for you to hear me speak about him. When we’ve come so far to foster our marriage.”

I shake my head. “I would never try to push him out of your heart.” I chuckled softly. “I just hope there’s space in it for me. Even if it’s one percent of the love you wish to offer me. I’ll take it.”

She pulls away from me slightly with glistening eyes. “What?”

“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you or our son. I may never be first in your heart, but that’s okay. It won’t affect the place you hold in mine.” I confess.

“I hold a place in your heart?” She looks at me, confused.

Do you not know, Reyna? Have I not shown you? My wife is either oblivious or in denial.

“What do you mean by that?” She has a small smile and now I know she’s baiting this cliché phrase. I don’t want to repeat it, yet I crave the words from her mouth.

“I won’t give you cliché words for the sake of it. Because what I feel for you is far beyond the word ‘love’.” I lean my head down so that my forehead touches hers. “Beyond lust,” I said, cupping her cheeks.

She stares at me, focused, calmly hanging on my every word. Her soft hands sit on top of my own. She suddenly closes her eyes and smiles as if at this moment she wants to hear everything I have to say.

“Reyna?” I softly call my wife.

With her eyes still closed, she answers, “Yes?”

“Do you want to torture the governor together? it might distract your mind.” I smile.

“Is that a date?” She smirks.

“Of course, it’s a date. I’ll even get us a nice table for dinner.” I insist.

“What a gentleman.” Reyna giggles.

Reyna

Kyro was not kidding when he said this would be a date. He had someone decorate the warehouse with twinkly lights and a dinner table with a fancy tablecloth. There are fries and crab on the plates. How did he know I’ve been craving crab?

“How did you know…?” I ask, sitting in the chair he pulls out for me.

Kyro rubs my cheek with his thumb, “You talk in your sleep.”

A muffled cry interrupts Kyro and I look up and see the governor tied by his feet hanging from the ceiling.

“Ignore the noise. The sedative is taking a while,” Kyro nonchalantly says. He points at the food. “I have never eaten crab with fries before. Why this combination?”

I grab a fry and dip it in ketchup, then a piece of crab in butter. “You eat them together. The salty and sweet combo is the best.” I feed it to him and watch his reaction to the food.
