The Next Day

Reyna

“Maeve called me and says she wants to meet up,” Kyro confesses as his arms wrap tighter around me in our bed.

Why? “When did she call and how does she have your number?” I narrow.

Kyro chuckles at my reaction. “It’s not my actual phone. It’s the burner phone I use when contacting people like her father. She must have gotten it from him.”

“What did she want?” I push.

“She wouldn’t say. Just that she wanted to meet.” He goes on.

My finger trails along his biceps and I don’t want to look up at him because I know I’m not a match for his intense stare.

Kyro puts his hand under my chin and forces me to look up at those icy eyes. “I won’t go, but if you’re curious, you can go meet her.”

“Why can’t you just go?” I yawn.

“I owe her nothing. I gave her father mercy when I should have slit his throat. That is the last favor she gets from me. The only person who gets to take up my time is you. I won’t waste it tending to another woman’s needs.” He smiles as he grabs my hand and kisses it. “Besides, you’re the queen of this city. Go tend to the people of the land.” He bursts out laughing.

I snort, “Isn’t that the king’s job?”

“No.” He pulls me on top of him. “The king’s job is to spoil his queen and kill anyone who gets in the way of them ruling their kingdom.”

I lean down and leave kisses on his neck as his hand rubs the side of my leg. “Then I guess I’ll go tend to our loyal subjects.”

“What a merciful queen.” He snickers.

I got off of him and ran into my closet to change. He gives me the time and location. Kyro insists on a dozen follow cars wherever I go now.

When I arrive at the meeting spot. It’s a café not too far from us. When I walk towards the table, she looks surprised to see me. “Hi Reyna, where’s Ky?” I’m starting to become a little annoyed by the way she shortens his name.

“He’s busy at the moment. So, he sent me to see what you wanted.” I calmly explain.

“Oh,” she looks a bit disheartened at hearing my answer.

I swallow, “So? What was it?”

“I just wanted to talk about how we left things. I thought the reason he was so intent on ruining my dad’s livelihood was that he was still mad at me.” She swallows.

What is she talking about? Kyro is disgusted by her father because he’s a pedophile, not because he still hung up on teenage puppy love.

“I just wanted to make sure none of this was personal. I’m not sure if he told you, but our breakup was terrible. I never knew who Kyro was. He kept his whole life a secret from me. He didn’t trust me and before he could explain, I broke up with him. When I had time to cool down, he wouldn’t answer my calls and when I went to see him in person, he had changed the locks to his apartment and moved out.” I could hear the sadness in her voice as she spoke about it.

I try to be as clear as possible when I say, “Kyro doesn’t care about the past anymore. Your father is a sick pervert who isn’t a good face for politics. His sick little addiction would have gotten him run out of town eventually and lastly, Kyro is not ruining his life. He is making sure it’s dead and buried. Just like your father will be if he doesn’t resign from office soon.” Maeve looks at me with shocked eyes. “It’s been a full day now and no news of the Governor’s transgressions.”

“Let me talk to Ky. He will take it back if I talk to him.” She pleads.

“If you think that Kyro would take it back, you never really knew him at all.” I stand up from the table. “I hope your father makes the right decision for you and your family’s sake.”

Kyro

I was hoping the governor would be too chicken shit to confess to the world that he’s hell’s champion. Which means I get a new pig to cut up.

Reyna walks into our room. “That was fast. You were barely an hour.” I scoff.

“Yeah…” Her furrowed brow and crossed arms reveal her irritation.
