I had too much to live for.

A vision for a future I knew would be beautiful.

A business I was excited about.

A family so big and full.

And a man who helped me discover it all.

I wasn’t a victim anymore. I was a survivor, and I was not about to let Emmett change that.

“Fuck!” he cursed, slamming my body into the wall before finally releasing his hold. The pain was throbbing, rolling like waves over and over. I couldn’t quite make out where I was, but I could hear him cursing me under his breath, so I crawled in the opposite direction, blinking furiously to try and bring everything back into focus.

“Cassie…” Aspen mumbled, falling out of the bathroom door and onto her knees.

The side of her head was bloody, and smears of red crossed her jaw. She scrambled toward me, and I reached out, trying to pull her closer. But just as our fingers brushed, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back and over to the old, rusty radiator that had probably been in this building since the day it was built. “Leave her alone,” I screamed, looking for something to help get me to my feet so I could fight him.

“Our business is trashed. Everyone is canceling their car checks, you have fuckingruinedeverything Brian and I worked for,” he snapped, the sound of skin hitting skin following.

A sound I’ll remember forever.

Because when he stepped back, Aspen’s hands were tied to the radiator, and her entire body was limp. “Aspen,” I screamed. “No, no, no!”

He turned on me, and I swung, scratched, and screamed.

For me.

For my best friend.

For my future.

And as he dragged me from the building and past the two men’s bodies at the bottom of the stairwell—men who were there to keep me safe and didn’t deserve this—and out to the car.

I kept telling myself I wouldn’t stop.

I wouldn’t stop fighting.

He’ll come for me.

There was no doubt in my mind.

I just had to keep fighting long enough.

DRAKE

Missed call.

Missed call.

Missed call.

I took the stairs onto the tarmac, trying to figure out who the hell to call back first.

“Hey!” I paused and looked out, noticing the black car waiting for me had two men standing outside instead of the single driver who should’ve been there to pick me up. “Hurry the hell up, we need to go.Now,” Reed ordered when I stopped moving.

I shook my head, my brow pinched together. “What are you do—”

“It’s Cassie.”
