I knew this was coming. Teresa was one of the most amazing women I’d ever met and one of my biggest supporters. She was also a woman who always got what she wanted, and she wanted nothing more than to see James in Foxy’s life.

“I was planning on this weekend, but I had no babysitter until now, so I guess this weekend is it.” My heart hammered in my chest like the time had already come. “Just make sure James has no guns within his reach or my son will have no mother.”

“Stop it. James loves you, and he’ll love you even more when he finds out you bore his child.”

“Loves me? Teresa, with all due respect, I don’t think we’re there. It hasn’t been long enough.”

“Since when do you put a timer on, love? Take it from a mother who knows her son better than he knows himself. James loves you.”

He loves me?

My windpipe closed for too long, and I coughed. “I hope you’re right, because I need all the help I can get to stay alive after the weekend.”

“So it works out well we’re having Foxy over for the weekend?” she asked.

“Of course. Thank you.” I hugged her.

“Our pleasure.” She stepped back. “You know, Laura, I can only imagine your parents would be as thrilled to know they’re grandparents as we are. Maybe after you tell James—”

“They’ll be next.”

A wave of jitters flew through my body and settled near my stomach. If this worked, I’d officially name myself a leprechaun.

“All I know is they’ll love Foxy as much as we do.”

Someone cleared her throat behind us, and we turned toward the door. Tiffany was standing there with Kensi at her side, holding her hand. The girl looked better than when I’d last seen her. The jaundice was gone, and she’d gained weight. No wonder James was so happy. I would be too if it were my kid.

“Hi Nana.” Kensi ran to her grandmother and threw her arms around her hips.

“Kensi wanted to see Mommy’s new design. I hope you don’t mind. Did I just hear you refer to Fox as Foxy? He told me you used to call him Foxy when he was a boy.”

My face went ashen, and Teresa blinked three times before she began damage control.

“You misheard. I was talking about Laura’s son, Ozzy.”

“I was sure I heard…”

Kensi slid her hand into mine, and Tiffany froze mid-sentence. “Can you show me all the gadgets?”

“Gadgets?”

“I know what they call my daddy: a double-oh-seven. You’re the girl version of a secret agent, so you must have gadgets.”

“We don’t want to bother people at work, Kensi.” Tiffany stepped closer.

I bent down as Kensi held onto my hand. “I don’t have any cool ones here, but we have moon cushions your mommy set by the windows and they feel like clouds. Clouds help me think. Want to try those out?”

Her eyes opened wide. “Yes. I have a moon cushion in my treehouse.”

“It won’t be long, I promise,” I told Tiffany, who stood openmouthed as she watched us walk away.

Kensi hopped on the largest oval pillow, sinking into its middle. The clear skies above gave the most picturesque view.

“Should you be jumping after your surgery?”

“I’ve got a super liver.”

“A what?” I laughed.
