“Sore subject, is it? Ok, then.” He saunters over the door and opens it for me. “If you want to join me for breakfast this morning, I’d love to have the company.”

“Are you for real?” My heart skips a beat, knowing it could be my chance to escape. Somehow.

“I’m always real,” he responds cryptically.

I haven’t eaten anything since Viktor brought me here. I’m starting to lose it a little bit. “I could go for breakfast.” I try and sound calm, but I know I’m failing at it.

“Great.” He motions for me to leave. “After you.”

I take the lead and head down the hallway, keeping my eyes peeled for anything I can use as a weapon, but the only thing in the hall are pictures, and those aren’t going to be good enough.

The kitchen is a gorgeous piece of art, with marble countertops and blue painted cabinets. Sunlight shines into the room through black framed windows, giving the space a warm vibe even, though it belongs to Viktor.

“Breakfast is ready to go.” He nods at the table, where a stack of pancakes sits. My stomach grumbles at the sight. “Go get it.”

I’m walking toward the table when a thought stops me. “They’re not poisoned, are they?”

“Why would I poison them? I’m going to eat them, too.”

Good enough for me. I grab a plate and stack pancake after pancake on it before gobbling them up. Viktor watches with a smile on his face. “What?” I say with my mouth full.

“You’re a messy eater.”

“I haven’t eaten for the past day because of you. I’m starving.” I stuff another huge bite into my mouth. Viktor finally joins me in eating, though his bites are smaller than mine.

“Sorry about that. I was busy with other plans and forgot to feed you.”

I huff. “Did I mention you’re an asshole?”

“You did.”

“Good. You’re an asshole.”

He winks as he pops another bite into his mouth.

It’s only then I realize I have a fork in my hands. I was so consumed by food I hadn’t noticed. Now, it’s the only thing I can think about.

A fork can be used as a weapon.

I chew more slowly, thinking over my plan. Screw it. I don’t have a plan. I just need to act.

So, I do.

I lunge over the table and stab the fork, aiming for Viktor’s eye. He jerks back while grabbing my arm and pushing me to the side. The momentum makes me fall to the ground, where I land with a grunt.

Viktor leans over me, scrabbling for the fork. With a scream, I jab the fork at his face, landing a good cut across his cheek. It doesn’t even faze him. In fact, he starts laughing.

“You think I’m afraid of pain, Gemma? I love pain. It’s my favorite pastime.”

“Then why are you fighting this so much?” I try to jab him again, but he keeps moving his head out of my reach.

“Because I don’t want to lose an eye, thank you very much. I’ve been told I have nice eyes. It would be a shame to lose them.” He grabs my wrist and pins it to the ground, knocking the fork out of my hand. “You know, I was trying to be nice, and you just showed me you only want to hurt me. That’s not nice of you.”

“Oh, shut it,” I grumble, trying to kick him, but he’s kneeling on top of me, and I’m not going anywhere. “Why can’t you just let me go?”

“Do you really miss your family that much?”

“Just let me go.” I buck my body upward, but he still doesn’t move.
