“Gemma, wake up.”

Something slaps my face, jerking me awake. Viktor’s handsome face is staring down at me with concern. Once he sees me coming awake, he smiles. “Hey there.”

I sit up, rubbing my head. “What happened?”

“You passed out on me.”

I look around. We’re still in the clubhouse surrounded by dead men, and I’m still covered in blood. “Oh my god. You just murdered them all.”

“Yep.” He stands, pulling me with him. “That’s pretty par for the course when it comes to me. So, shall we go to our wedding now? Unless you need to faint again.”

I swat his arm. “I’m not a fainter.”

“Your actions beg to differ.”

My eyes land on Johnny, the scrawny man who didn’t give Viktor his full cut. He’s lying face up on the ground, his eyes still open, his body riddled with bullets. “Did these people really deserve to die?”

“Probably not.” He takes my hand as I blink is surprise. “We have a wedding to get to.”

I rip my hand away from him. “I’m not marrying you, Viktor. Look around. You just massacred a bunch of people right before our wedding. And look at me! I’m covered in blood. No. We should go home so I can change. I can’t get married in this.”

Viktor slants his eyes at me. “Are you stalling?”

“What? No!”

“I think you’re stalling.” He places his hands on my hips, drawing me closer to him. I can’t help it—my body trembles at his touch. “But, Gemma, I’d marry you covered in blood or not. So, we’re going to the church and getting married. End of discussion.”

“What about what I want?”

“What do you want?”

“I don’t want this!” I open my arms wide to encompass the clubhouse and all the dead men in it. “I don’t murder and chaos and carnage. I want a life of—of fun, of choices. Freedom.”

“I can give you that.”

“How?”

“By marrying me, you’ll never have to put up with your uncle again or your demanding mother. We can travel the world if we want. With me, life will be an endless time of fun. Trust me.”

“That’s the problem. I don’t trust you.” Though his words are good. A life filled with travel and adventure sounds amazing. But Viktor will probably end up in a shootout no matter where we go, and I don’t think I can handle the stress.

Viktor opens his mouth to reply when sirens break the silence. “Oops. That’s our cue to go.” He grabs my hand and runs out of the clubhouse, hurrying to his car. Police cars come careening around the corner the moment we get inside. Viktor takes off, but one of the policemen spots us and tells us to stop over the speaker.

“Should we stop?”

Viktor revs the engine, picking up speed. “Hell no. I’d just go to jail.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?”

He gives me his disarming smirk before settling his gaze on the road. “Maybe for the world, but not for me, Gem. We’re getting married today. Even if we have to go on a high-speed car chase.” He turns a corner fast, almost clipping another car. I clutch the door in fear while my stomach feels like it drops to my feet. Viktor starts laughing manically as he goes down side streets, evading the police car still chasing us.

For a moment, I consider jumping out of the car. The police are behind us. They’d help me. But I’d probably end up dead on the asphalt from how fast Viktor is driving. And who knows, the cops might think I’m an accomplice. I’m in a wedding dress, after all. The safest place for me right now is at Viktor’s side. Damnit.

Viktor pulls into a parking garage and stops the car so fast that I lurch forward. “We need a new car.” He wipes down his prints from the steering wheel and door handle, motioning for me to do the same. I follow his lead. Viktor, dragging me with him, runs over to another car and breaks the window. “No time for picking the lock. Get in.”

I hesitate. I could just wait for the police to arrive. Their sirens are getting closer.

“Gemma.” Viktor looks confused as he stares at me. “Get in the car.”
