“Are you going to force me?”

“Nope. But good luck explaining to the police why you’re covered in blood.”

Good point.

With a grimace, I get into the car with him. Viktor fiddles with the wires in the console behind the steering wheel and gets the car up and running just as the police enter the garage. Viktor waits for them to pass behind us before slowly driving out of the garage, leaving the police to continue their search.

Viktor lets out a whoop as we drive away, no more police chasing us. “That was fun, wasn’t it?” The smile he gives me is so charming that I smile in return.

“I wouldn’t exactly call that fun.”

“It was an adventure, though.”

“Fuck you.”

Viktor laughs.

He’s right, though. This entire day has been an adventure, albeit an incredibly terrifying one. But I’ve never felt more alive.

Dropping my head back, I let out a whoop of excitement myself.

* * *

We arriveat a large Catholic church. The stained-glass windows look beautiful in the sun, which is funny, considering how ragged I look. I don’t belong in a church like this. Sure, my family is Catholic, but I never really practiced the religion. I’m too much of a sinner at this point.

“Ready?”

I glare at Viktor. “Not really.”

He chuckles as he gets out of the car and waits for me to do the same. Two people pass us on the street and stare at me. All I can do is shrug.

Viktor takes me inside the church, where a sermon is taking place. The priest at the podium is speaking about the all-mighty God to the people in the pews.

“Oh, Father!” Viktor calls out, stopping the priest mid-sentence. “I’d like to be married today.”

The priest blinks. “Uh. You’ll have to schedule a meeting with me before you can get married in my church.”

“You didn’t plan this?” I whisper to Viktor.

“Of course not,” he says like I’m an idiot for even asking. He turns back to the priest. “Yeah, but listen. I really want to get married to my girl today. You see, I sent out invitations and everything, so you’d be doing me a solid if you just married us.”

“You’ll have to schedule a meeting,” the priest repeats. “Now, either kindly sit down, or I’ll have to ask you to leave.”

Viktor spins around, his arms wide. “What kind of service is this? I just want to get married.”

A woman in the pew next to me looks at me and gasps as she takes in my blood-stained dress. “Oh my. Are you hurt?”

“No,” I tell her. “Just with an asshole.” I nod at Viktor.

“You’ll have to leave,” the priest says.

“I don’t think so.” Viktor checks his watch. “I’m expecting visitors, so you might want to clear out all these people. Otherwise, they might be cannon fodder.” He holds his hands up. “No promises.”

As if on cue, the church doors burst open, and a group of six men run into the room, guns in their hands. Screams fill the church as the innocent civilians either try and make a run for the door or duck down in the pews, covering their heads and praying not to die. I recognize one of the men as Will, Franco’s man.

“Just on time,” Viktor says.

From behind the group of men, someone walks into the church. Franco.
