“Tracking now… and… got it. Shit! You’re not going to like this, DV. The sim card is somewhere inside the commune. Which means…”

“…that the person using the sim card… the killer… is inside the commune,” I said hoarsely.

This confirmed Tasha’s belief that someone had aimed that vase at her head earlier.

“Make sure the police team is on its way to Paradiso. I’ll check on Samar and Jaideep. Meet you there as soon as possible.”

I hung up and set off for the commune. But I got stuck behind a parade halfway across the city. It was some sort of religious procession, followed by a float and dancers. I slammed my hands against the steering wheel. Dammit!

I called Samar in desperation, hoping he had reached the commune by now. But I could barely hear him over the blaring music.

“Where are you guys? Hello?”

“We’re stuck on the way. The roads are all jammed,” he yelled into the phone.

Fucking hell!

CHAPTER23

TASHA

My head hurt like a bitch, especially the back of it, and I wanted to throw up.

When I opened my eyes, the world spun around me like a rollercoaster possessed by the ghost from The Exorcist. I shut them again and took a few deep breaths to calm my nausea.

I heard a soft laugh. A familiar one that tied my stomach into knots. Similar to the ones on my hands and feet. I was tied to the grill on my window!Sonofabitch!

I forced my eyes open and shot daggers at the smiling face leaning over mine.

“You knocked me out!”

“Yes! With your own golf club. I didn’t think it would be so easy, but it was. And then all I had to do was tie you up.”

“Are you out of your fucking mind?”

She shook her head.

“No, I’m not. My husband had me tested. The psychiatrist says I’m not mad. I’m just a garden-variety psychopath. And right now, baby, I’m your worst fucking nightmare come true,” replied my ex-friend, Sandhya, who was sitting on a chair in front of me.

I was propped up against the wall below the window.

Sandhya leaned back in her chair and studied me intently.

“Didn’t you guess at all?”

“That you’re the one who killed Vishal Agarwal?”

She nodded pleasantly and leaned forward.

“That, of course. But also that I hate you.So. Very. Much.”

I leaned against the wall and wondered how I had never noticed the glint of madness in her eyes during the many evenings we had spent talking about our lives. She had gone way past ‘garden-variety psychopath’, and was now in full-blown ‘mad killer’ territory.

“You mean you did all this on your own? I don’t believe it,” I scoffed.

I knew I was risking my life by needling her, but I had to keep her talking until some help arrived. My body went cold when I remembered that I had driven DV away and that he was too upset to come back.Shit!

But that was okay. I didn’t want her to harm him anyway. If I could deal with my psycho mother, I could deal with Sandhya. I could deal with anything on earth, I thought, squaring my shoulders.
