Page 15 of Her Warm Embrace

Our increased viewership has created enough revenue that the network has allocated us the funds to design a whole new set. I got to be a part of the initial planning process, but since then it’s been Nathan who has taken on the challenge. He’s worked with the design team day in and day out to come up with something magical. Today, I get to see it for the first time.

“I can hardly wait!” I squeeze Nathan’s hand as he gets the door unlocked.

“Ok, sweetheart. I want you to close your eyes as we step inside.”

When I cover my eyes, Nathan puts a hand on my lower back and steers me toward the sound stage. I can tell we’ve entered the space when I hear instrumental Christmas music ringing through the speakers.

My heart leaps in my chest. “Can I open my eyes now?”

Nathan lets out a heavy breath. “Yes, now.”

I open my eyes and my breath catches in my chest. The set is decorated in nuanced shades of winter gold, dappled with deep jewel tints. Panels of green-tinged paper hang from elaborate double arches that support a golden ceiling hung with crystal chandeliers and glass snowflake ornaments thick with glitter.

There’s an enormous evergreen in the background and beside it, a mock storefront that looks just like Broken Ornament Cat Café. This set is all the best parts of Christmas Town on display for the world to see, and I am in love. Not only with the set, but with the man who made this come to life.

“This is incredible.” My eyes rake over every inch, taking in the details.

“There’s one more thing I want to show you.” Nathan tugs me toward the set and pulls out a small black box from one of the tree branches.

Then, he lowers himself onto one knee. I can feel the smile stretch across my face as he opens the box and the sparkling diamond ring inside glitters up at me. The stones catch the light of the Christmas tree, twinkling like stars in the night sky. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

Tears of joy spring from my eyes. Not only for me, but for the awkward middle school girl who loved Nathan from the start. This is the fairy-tale ending to a lifelong crush and the start of our happily ever after.

“Holly, you’re like home to me. I don’t know what I’d do without you in my world. The best parts of my life are all of you… you’re family, you’re traditions, and your best sugar cookies. You are pure Christmas cheer all year round and my life is better with you in it. I want to spend every waking second trying to make you as happy as you make me. Will you marry me?”

My heart soars as his words wrap around me. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted to hear and more. “Nathan, I’ve loved you for a long time. I want to marry you. Yes!”

Nathan’s eyes twinkle with emotion as he reaches his arms around me, lifting me off the ground. We gaze into each other’s eyes and I can feel my heart soaring with love. He presses his lips against mine, sending bolts of electricity through my body. I melt in his embrace, feeling completely content.

He pulls away from me. “I’m so glad you said yes because this was going to be pretty awkward if you didn’t. They’re all watching.” He points to the camera, and I notice the red light illuminated below it. “Since they were here at the beginning of our story, I thought it only fair they get to see how we start forever.”

Tears of joy brimmed in my eyes as I smiled and waved to the camera, my diamond ring twinkling like a star in front of the sparkling Christmas lights. This moment felt like it marked the beginning of our beautiful journey together.
