He does, though his brow crinkles. “On some digital devices, numbers have a distinct beep to represent each one. And if you know the sound, you know the number... You know?”

“I know,” I tell him, sitting back in the passenger seat. “That’s why it’s soundless. Park in G8. It’s for my visitors.”

“Are you going to make me close my eyes on the way up too?” he snarks, turning his car off and grabbing his phone.

Sarcasm oozes into my tone as I raise a brow. “Should I?”

“I could be a stalker.”

“If you were, you wouldn’t have told me.”

Ezra smirks. “Maybe I’m a cocky stalker.”

“Again... You wouldn’t have told me,” I point out, giving him my back as we move toward the elevators. “You would just walk into my apartment and know where everything is without being told, which would alert me to your prowling ways. After that, I’d lure you into a room where I know you wouldn’t be expecting weapons.”

“A test, huh?” he teases.

“Yes,” I quip. “Just know, if you fail, it’s easier to clean my apartment than it is a stranger’s house. There is no carpet, only rugs that I can throw out. And I have loads of bleach on hand.”

He observes me using my apartment key to call the elevator down, then tilts his head in consideration. “Is it failing if I know where everything is or if I don’t? I'm confused now.”

“Yes,” I repeat, leading him into the elevators before it leaves us.

The ride to the fourth floor is quiet, but as soon as I unlock my door, he starts up again.

“So, tell me about yourself.”

“I’d rather choke.”

“That’s a bit extreme,” he mutters, glancing around my minimalist home. “You seem to be doing well.”

The monotone color palette matches my city, with splashes of crimson and gold. Potted plants litter the main space with pops of green I’ve accumulated over the years to liven up my black and white world. I keep nothing of importance here, though. Everything within these walls is replaceable.

“Sure.”

He frowns at my response. “You’re not going to give me an inch, are you?”

“If I give you an inch, you’ll take a mile,” I say, shaking my head. “And I don’t have that much to give today.”

We stare at each other, and I witness the moment something clicks in his mind. I can’t say what it is exactly, but I don’t like the way his prismatic eyes glow with a deeper knowledge of me.

“How long have you been seeing Riley?” he inquires.

“I’m not seeing anyone,” I reply.

It feels like the wrong answer, and I regret it as soon as it’s out of my mouth. Avoiding his questions is now high on my priority list. I sigh to myself as I wander toward the hallway.

“I’ll be back in a minute. I’m going to wash all this blood off and change,” I explain, trying to be a polite hostess. “Behave, please. And stay out of my freezer.”

“What’s in the freezer?” he calls after me, though he doesn’t follow. “That’s where you keep your sex tapes, isn’t it?”

I peek around the doorway of my bedroom. “I keep those in the top of my closet, like everyone else.”

“Then what’s in the freezer?”

“A head.”

He blinks twice, processing my confession before smiling. “Are you serious?”
