“It was worth every penny,” Carter said all of a sudden, and I glanced over at him.

“What?” I asked distractedly, because Jack had decided to play with my hair.

“The date. I can tell you’re thinking stuff you shouldn’t. I would have paid double that.”

My gaze widened. “Why?” I whispered.

“Because there’s nothing worth more than you,” he said softly, his fingers lightly caressing my cheek.

The weird thing was…staring into his eyes…I could tell he meant it.

Which begged the question. Why?

* * *

I splashed some water on my face, trying to get a fucking hold on myself. I looked wired. My constant state since Kennedy had wandered into the arena after five fucking years.

It felt likeIwas the one who’d woken up from a deep sleep. I hadn’t realized how much I’d been going through the motions of life, pretending to be a man who hadn’t lost everything.

I watched her nervously step onto the ice, amused and somehow turned on at the same time. She was a beautiful mess out here, wobbling like a newborn deer. Her face was determined as she tried not to faceplant.

I took her hand, my grip firm, and gave her a reassuring smile. "All right, baby, it's not rocket science. First things first, find your balance. Bend your damn knees a bit and don't be scared to lean forward. You want your center of gravity over your skates."

She nodded, her eyes wide with uncertainty, but she did as I said. Her first few steps were shaky as hell, and I could practically see the panic in her eyes. But I wasn't about to let her fall flat on her ass.

"Keep your weight on the balls of your feet," I told her patiently. "And don't overthink it."

As she continued to stumble and regain her balance, I stayed close, ready to catch her if needed. "Okay, now let's try some gliding," I said, releasing her hand but hovering nearby, just in case.

She pushed off tentatively with one foot, then the other, her movements jerky and awkward. It was like watching a damn baby giraffe trying to take its first steps. I had to bite back a chuckle.

"Relax, Kennedy," I called out, unable to hide the amusement in my voice. "You're not auditioning for the Olympics."

She gained confidence on the ice pretty quick, and I was impressed. She was no longer stumbling like a novice, and her movements were becoming smoother with each passing moment.

I clapped my hands and she glanced at me questioningly. With a grin I never seemed to get rid of around her, I bent down slightly, preparing to lift her onto my shoulders.

"Hold on tight," I warned her, my voice playful.

“What?” she’d asked, before letting out a surprised laugh as I placed my hands under her arms, lifting her off the ice with ease. Kennedy clung to my shoulders as I stood up straight.

"Ready baby?" I asked, slowly starting to skate around the rink with her on my shoulders. Her laughter filled the air, and it was like music to my ears.

As we glided across the ice together, her tension melted away. Her grip on my shoulders relaxed, and she began to enjoy the ride. I glanced up at her, feeling weirdly giddy at how wide her smile was.

It had been like that since we’d met, like my happiness was dependent on…her happiness.

After a few laps, I decided to take it up a notch. I lifted her off my shoulders and slid her down my body. “Wrap your legs around me, baby,” I murmured, watching her face, mesmerized as she bit down on her lip and did as I asked.

Fuck. I hadn’t thought this through. My dick was way too close to what I knew was going to be the sweetest pussy I’d ever experience.

Her eyes met mine and I got a little dizzy staring at her.

We were so young. It wasn’t supposed to feel like this. Like my soul had found its counterpart.

I wanted to kick my own ass when I said things like that, but I couldn’t help it.

Something in me knew she was it for me. She was it forthem.
