“Of course. Will you be bringing more cookies next weekend?”

Sophie laughed. “Yes, I will. Let me add a few more to your bag though. I have tons left over.” She poured half of her bag into his and he looked like he’d won the lottery.

“Thank you. These won’t go to waste.”

“See you next weekend, Billy.” Sophie headed home. There were still plenty of leftover cookies for her and Caroline to enjoy later. She’d offer them to Tessa, but she usually passed on sweets and liked to say that sugar was evil. That was probably how she stayed so thin. It didn’t seem like a fun way to live if one couldn’t enjoy a homemade chocolate chip cookie or two now and then.

Chapter Thirty-Eight

“Murderstonight?” The text message from Max came a little after four that afternoon. Caroline had just gotten home, and she and Sophie were catching up over a cup of vanilla tea.

“Do you mind if I invite Max over? He wants to watchMurderswith us?” Sophie asked.

“Of course. I wonder how things went with him and Tessa at the comedy show? I texted her to wish her a Happy Thanksgiving and she didn’t mention it,” Caroline said.

“I don’t see the two of them dating,” Sophie said. “But, you never know. Tessa is gorgeous. Maybe she is his type.”

“He asked you to go first,” Caroline reminded her. “I don’t see it either. I’m not sure who would be her type, actually.”

Sophie texted Max back. “Sure. Caroline’s back. Want to come here to watch, say around seven?”

He texted back immediately. “See you then. I’ll grab the pizza this time.”

At a few minutes past seven, Max arrived with the pizzas. Sophie grabbed paper plates and napkins while Caroline poured them all a glass of wine. They sat around the kitchen table and talked about their Thanksgivings.

“It was good to see my family, but then of course my mother started in on how I should sell this place and get something smaller. She’s convinced that I won’t be able to support myself. She actually suggested that I kick you and Tessa out.” Sophie sighed. “Of course, I told her I wasn’t doing any such thing. I know she means well. She’s just worried that my deals won’t close.”

“If people haven’t worked on commission like we do, it’s hard for them to understand. It just seems terrifying,” Caroline said and laughed. “In a way it is scary, but you do get used to it after a while.”

“I hope yours was calmer,” Sophie said.

“Yes! My parents are used to it now. We had a nice relaxing time. Tons of food of course. Ed came over Thanksgiving night and had dessert with us.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize he lived near you?” Sophie said.

“He’s about an hour and a half away. It was nice that he made the trip in. He stayed over that night and headed home in the morning. My mother and I hit the shops for Black Friday and he wanted no part of that.”

“What about you, Max?” Caroline asked.

“I flew to Palm Beach and my mother and I went to Flagler Steakhouse at The Breakers hotel. It’s our usual thing. She doesn’t cook. I spent the rest of the weekend visiting with her and getting some writing done. It was a good break.”

They ate more pizza and had a bit more wine before Sophie asked, “So how was the comedy show? Did you and Tessa have fun?”

“It was pretty good. I love a good comedy show. We grabbed a burger at a pub nearby first.” He answered very matter-of-factly so it was hard for Sophie to get a read on how he actually enjoyed spending time with Tessa.

Max met her eyes, and she couldn’t read them at all.

“I heard you had a hot date the night before,” he said. “How was your evening at the Met?”

She put her pizza down. His tone was teasing, but she couldn’t help but wonder what Tessa had said to him.

“It wasn’t a date. Just a networking thing with my boss. It was pretty fun though.”

He smiled and reached for another slice of pizza. “Glad you had a good time. I didn’t think you were actually dating your boss by the way. I thought Tessa might be joking.”

“That’s Tessa, always joking,” Caroline said.

“I’m surprised she’s not back yet,” Sophie said.
