Sophie still felt uncomfortable about it. “Are you sure? Maybe I could split it with Tessa if he rents it.”

Rick shook his head. “No, you won’t split it. If he rents this apartment it won’t be because of anything Tessa did. She said there was nothing to show him. You thought of it and saw the possibility of turning the two bedroom into three.” He looked at the computer for a moment and then added, “He was just an ad call that Tessa picked up over a month ago. You developed more of a relationship with him in one night. Relationships are everything. That’s why he called you. Take him there and see what he thinks.”

“Okay, I will.”

Sophie walked back to her desk and had to walk by Tessa, and she turned in her chair so her back was facing Sophie. The air felt decidedly frosty. Caroline could sense it too.

“What was that all about? I saw the two of you in Rick’s office.”

Sophie told her and Caroline looked sympathetic. “That’s a tricky one. I see why Rick wanted you to run with it. Tessa dropped the ball. She does as little with rentals as possible.”

“Rick said he was an ad call,” Sophie said.

“That makes sense. I wouldn’t worry about it. Remember the saying, ‘it’s not personal, it’s just business.’ Tessa wouldn’t hesitate to do the same if it was the other way around.”

Sophie smiled. “Okay. I’m sure you’re right about that.”

“I am. Good luck with it!”

Sophie checked with Sue, who had the rental listing and she said that it was empty so they could go anytime. She called Sean and agreed to meet him and his girlfriend at the apartment at noon.

She got there ten minutes early and they were both already waiting outside the building. Sean introduced her to his girlfriend, Grace, who had short curly brown hair, black rimmed glasses and a big smile.

“I was so excited when Sean said you mentioned an apartment by the Met. This location is ideal,” Grace said.

Sophie smiled. “I love this building. I think it’s so elegant inside and it’s quiet too.” She led them inside past the smiling doorman, through the long, marble-lined foyer to the security desk.

“I’m showing the Emersons’ unit on 10,” said. The man behind the security desk nodded and Sophie continued on. When they reached the apartment on the tenth floor, she opened the door and stepped back to let them walk in first. The unit had an impressive entrance, a small foyer that led into an oversized living room and nook area that could easily be turned into an office with a partition.

One of the two bedrooms had already been turned into a library/office and both Sean and Grace stopped short when they saw it. The room was a book lover’s dream with two walls of bookshelves filled completely with books. There was a cozy sofa that faced a fireplace and a television and by the window there was an oversized desk.

“We might be fighting over this room,” Sean said with a laugh. “This gives us ideas for how to set our own stuff up.”

“I can see how we can turn that area by the window into an office,” Grace said. “And in this room, we can put our pull-out sofa, so it can be a guest room, too.”

“That window in the makeshift office will have the best view, too. It looks directly at the Met,” Sean said.

“It does. I think I might prefer that spot actually,” Grace said.

They looked at the kitchen, which was small but had a nice layout and a little side area with several stools that turned it into a dining nook. It was really a lovely and very cozy apartment with high ceilings and elegant finishing touches like crown moldings.

After they’d had a chance to see the whole apartment, Sophie asked them what they thought of it. She knew it was still an expensive rental.

Sean smiled at Grace, who nodded and pulled a checkbook out of her purse.

“Can we give you a deposit today? We want this apartment. It’s pretty much perfect.”

Sophie could tell they liked it, but she was surprised that they wanted to move that fast.

“Of course. I’ll email you the rental application and we should know in a day or two. They just need to do a quick background check.”

“I’ll send it right back,” Sean said.

“We don’t want anyone else to offer on it,” Grace said.

“I’ll call Sue, the listing broker, to let her know. I’ll email you very shortly,” Sophie said.

“Great. Thanks for thinking of this place for us, Sophie. I’m glad we ran into each other at the Italian restaurant.” He smiled at Grace. “Maybe we’ll be regulars there. We’ll be able to walk over once we move in.”
