Her brown eyes search mine, her own vulnerabilities reflecting right back. Because we both might be a million miles from where we once were, but the journey can’t be forgotten, and our scars will forever be marred and remembered for what they are. “Always always, yeah?” she tells me.

“Always.” I nod.

She steps into me, letting me hug her as we sway to the music.

“Girlies, I feel left out,” Lucy squeals, forcing her way into the hug. “You’re not going to ditch me now you’re legally sisters, are you?”

“We’d never, Luce,” Nina tells her, wrapping an arm around her.

Megan slips her head between Nina and me, and we split apart, smiling as she joins our circle.

I look around for Lissie, spotting her already dancing with Charlie. “Lissie!” I shout.

Charlie’s glare is instant, and I give him the finger when Lissie doesn’t think twice about ditching him.

“He said you’re a real lady, Scar.”

I dip my head back and laugh, cuddling into her the second she’s close enough. “It’s my wedding day, I can get away with it.”

The song changes toThere She Goesby The La’s, and as I look around at the women who got me to today, who will dance with me into tomorrow, I can’t help but feel a sense of immense security.

Because good men exist, we sometimes find the very best of them, but good girls?

Those bitches are for life.

“If I take it off, it will all be over!” Ave whines, flopping back to the bed in her dress.

I follow her, dropping my head to the side to smile at her when my own dress settles across the comforter. “Today was a good day, huh, Ave?”

“The best.” She hugs my arm, kissing the back of it. “He’s going to stay now, isn’t he?” she says, hopeful.

I take her hand lying between us on the bed, squeezing it tight.

“Forever,” Lance mutters from the door.

Lifting my head off the bed, I take him in, the tuxedo I had made for him doing all the things. I roll my eyes, over the top, just like Ave would.

He walks to us and lies down on the other side of Ave. “Even when you don’t agree with me on dad stuff, remember?”

She gives him a toothy grin. “I remember.”

“Good.” He kisses her forehead, reaching an arm above her head to smooth the backs of his fingers over my temple. “I love you.” He looks down. “Both of you.”

“We love you, too, Daddy.”

I readjust my head on the bed, staring up at Waverley’s ceiling as the celebrations outside continue, knowing there’s no place I’d rather be than here with them.

We lie silently, Lance’s thumb dusting my cuticle as the sun finally dips beyond the horizon, waiting as the moon illuminates the sky, smiling as the stars shine.

And it’s not terrifying or earth shattering to watch the darkness slowly settle over us—

“Mummy, you can turn the light out now. We don’t have to be afraid anymore.”

Because tomorrow the sun will rise.

The End.
