Page 78 of Don't Make Promises

I break through the surface and tread water as I laugh at the fun everyone is having. There’s splashing and people making out, as well as a couple of cheerleaders on the shoulders of some jocks.

The smile falls from my lips when I meet the unimpressed face of Noah.

In hindsight, I suppose it’s a good thing Jack wasn’t around to see me bare my chest to the party. To be fair, I told them not to come. Swimming to the edge, I fold my arms onto the side of the pool, kicking my legs as I look up at Noah.

Feigned innocence coats my words as I ask, “You not joinin’ us?”

“Get out of the pool, Savannah.”

Ignoring his command, because he doesn’t get to tell me what to do, I push under the water before breaking back through the surface. “Sorry, I just wanted to clear out my ears. I could have sworn it sounded like you were telling me what to do.”

It’s his turn to ignore me as he bends to pick up my bikini top. He hands it to me before folding his arms over his impressive chest. “Be in the pool house in five minutes or there’ll be hell to pay, Savannah.”

Trying to keep the smug smile off of my face, I snap the top into place before giving him a pointed look. With a nod of his head and one last look, he stalks off toward the back of the garden.

Cecila races over to me, a grin on her face. “Oh my, Van. Is it actually gonna happen?”

“I think so,” I murmur, suddenly nervous for what’s to come.

Pulling myself from the pool, I take the towel that Cecila is holding out for me, roughly drying my hair before dabbing it over my body. “Do I look okay?”

Cecila swipes under my eyes and flattens down a strand of hair before stepping back and saying, “You look hot. Go get ‘im, Van.”

With a shimmy of my shoulders, I drop the towel on a lounger before I squeeze Cecila’s hands and race toward the back of the garden.

The noise from the party dies down with every step I take, and the butterflies that took flight in my stomach the moment he told me to meet him at the pool house, flutter wildly.

A light shines next to the front door, guiding my way. On the other side, the guy who has my heart is going to have my body, mind and soul. Finally. It’s been a long time coming.

My hand rests on the doorknob as I will myself to relax. I just jumped into a pool in front of nearly thirty people, without my top on andthismakes me nervous.

Sucking in a deep breath, I unlock the door and step into the room. My eyes find him in an instant, leaning against the back of the couch. When I close the door behind me, we’re engulfed in darkness. It takes a minute for my eyes to adjust before I can safely walk toward him. In here, it’s just the two of us.

“You wanted to see me?” I say, my voice a throaty murmur.

In a stark contrast, his is pained when he says, “You need to stop, Van.”

My brow tugs into a frown as my head rears back. Stop what exactly? I’m staring at him mutely when I realize I haven’t actually voiced my question. “What exactly do I need to stop, Noah? Having fun?”

“Yes,” he roars as he stands and starts to pace. “Fucking hell, yes, if it means you being half naked around other people. You need tofuckingstop.”

I can honestly say I don’t know what is going through my mind when I reach behind me and unclasp my top, pulling the straps down my arms. It falls to the floor at my feet and I don’t miss the way his eyes dart to my chest before he turns away and curses under his breath.

“Can I be half naked around you?” I ask, my voice thick with lust.

Cautiously, I move forward until I’m standing in front of him. He shouldn't let the promise he made to Jack keep us apart. I love him and I have since the moment I met him.

His voice is filled with torment when he says, “No.”

Smoothing my hands over the expanse of his chest and down his arms, I ask coyly, “Even if I want to give you all of me?” I pray he understands what I’m saying. What I’m willing to give to him.

Noah cups my face, smoothing his thumbs over the apples of my cheeks. My eyes widen at the realization that he might kiss me. His gaze dips to my mouth before lifting to meet mine again.

This is it.

Heat pools between my legs at his touch and what’s to come.

Closing his eyes, Noah’s hands fall from my face as he takes a step back. Suddenly I’m cold and a ball of dread settles in the pit of my stomach.
